Off topic - but does anyone know anything about the process involved with the city deciding to cut down trees, especially old-growth oak trees, along streets and how to get involved?

DC has a department of Urban Forestry that I believe makes the decisions regarding cutting down public space trees. Typically they only cut down old trees if they are diseased or if they are unstable. A lot of the planter boxes are too shallow for large trees, which is why so many fall down after heavy winds.
