SCI AM: Porous Pavement
Scientific American has a interesting short on EPA testing of different types of porous pavement. They are trying to find the type best at filtering out impurities before they run off into the soil, or a nearby body of water.

The city should expand its efforts to encourage the use of all porous substrates to replace impervious surfaces. Of course the jury is still out on the total effectiveness for treatment of the "runoff' but it still will help significantly with the District's combined sewage overflow problem. WASA is talking about spending billions to try to mitigate the problem with gigantic underground storm water quantity control facilities that will take a while to build and cost a fortune to maintain.
