WP: Island Dyes Robbed at Gunpoint

DSC_0795
The Washington Post has a story on the recent gunpoint robbery of Island Dyes (a headshop located at 331 H Street). Island Dyes sells pipes (for tobacco use), t-shirts, posters, incense, and more. According to the article the two robbers wore all black and one wore a black mask. The one employee who was present at the time was not injured during the robbery. The gunmen left with cash.

  1. glad no one was hurt - the West end of H Street has become a hub for head shops, tattoo parlors, and the new vape lounge - a hipster's paradise

  2. So, now that weed is legal, is it really necessary to point out that the pipes are for 'tobacco use'?

Do we hang on to these little conceits for fun, or is there some _other_ law at play?

  3. It's because it's now more rebellious to smoke tobacco than to smoke marijuana.

  4. 9:48,
I'd say mostly for fun. If you click through to my other flickr photos of Island Dyes you'll see a pic of one of their funny signs about it.

  5. That's a good strategy. Robbing people in the middle of a blizzard.

Props out to the business owner for being open for business in yesterday's weather. I wish some dining establishments were open yesterday.

    1. 11:25,
There were actually a bunch of places open in our area yesterday. Non-exhaustive list: Argonaut, Biergarten Haus, Red Rocks, Dangerously Delicious, Star & Shamrock, Bullfrog Bagels, Queen Vic, Po Boy Jim's, Boundry Road, H Street Organic Market, Chinito's Burritos, most places in Union Market.

Chinito's Burritos is located at 635 Florida Ave. Tasty and very fresh burritos, bowls, tacos, and more. Owner Jin Chong makes his own hot sauces too.

  8. The blog author needs to be corrected. You live north of Florida Ave. The places you have listed are on H Street. This is certainly not "our" area from your perspective. You live in an entirely different neighborhood.

  9. @1:44 "This is certainly not "our" area from your perspective."

Thanks for telling the author what her perspective is. I'm sure you're incredibly lonely and looking for an outlet for your discontent, but try not to be such an anon jerk.

I think 1:44's main problem is that trolls have really short legs. It must be terribly hard to imagine someone choosing to walk a couple of blocks to a restaurant or bar. Frankly, I'm impressed that the confines of his neighborhood extend beyond his basement apartment.

  11. "two robbers wore all black"

Well, just look for them at one of the Hipster bars... :-)

Trying reading first. This blog is "a look at what's going on in Trinidad, on H Street, and in the larger area north of Capitol Hill."

  13. Sorry but I have to say that Chintos hasn't been good for a while. When they first opened they had all kinds of rotating options and unique sauces, but it has been the same tired menu day afte day for years now. The only changes he has made is actually giving away free water, and, more importantly nickeling and diming customers. 12 dollars for a shrimp burrito? Come on man. May as well go down to chupacabra and get ripped off there. At least they have booze.

  15. Alan's just not writing stuff for the blog anymore, Maude is just a play on moderator. It's a friend who is helping me out a bit with certain tasks.

  16. I always liked the veggie burritos at Chinito's. Cheaper and healthier.

  17. That dude that works there (don't know if he's the owner) looks like Carrot Top.

  18. That's Glen and he's the owner...
