The H Street Festival is a lot of fun, but there's a ton of logistical planning that goes into making it happen. Parking restrictions, street closures, and bus detours are a necessary evil that aren't a big deal as long as you remember and plan ahead.

Parking restrictions on H Street NE will go into effect at 4am tomorrow morning and remain in place until about 11pm (this could end earlier). During this time you will not be able to park on H Street NE between Fourth Street NE and Florida Ave NE. Emergency No Parking signs should already be posted to alert you.

During the same period the following streets will be closed to vehicular traffic.

H Street, NE, from 3rd Street, NE to Florida Avenue, NE

4th Street, NE, from G Street, NE to I Street, NE (local traffic only)

5th Street, NE, from G Street, NE to I Street, NE (local traffic only)

6th Street, NE, from G Street, NE to I Street, NE (local traffic only)

7th Street, NE, from G Street, NE to I Street, NE (local traffic only)

13th Street, NE, from G Street, NE to I Street, NE (local traffic only)

14th Street, NE, from Florida Avenue, NE to Maryland Avenue, NE

All street closures and listed times are subject to change based upon prevailing or unexpected conditions.

Expect parking restrictions along the street and watch out for the posted emergency no parking signage. All vehicles that are parked in violation of the emergency no parking signs will be ticketed and towed.

The streetcar will not run during festival, or earlier that morning. It should start running again once the street reopens to vehicular traffic. The following buses will detour from 4am to 9pm: 90, 92, D8, X2. Note that the detours should end at 9pm (WMATA apparently thinks that 11pm reopening time is too conservative).

The H Street Festival is headed our way this Saturday. That means tons of live music, food, vendors of all sorts. Most businesses will remain open during the festival, but some restaurants may run an abbreviated menu. I don't have a ton of details about what to expect beyond the usual fun from past years, and I think your best bet is to ask or check social media/newsletters from a particular business if you want to know what they have planned.

I do know that AtlasVet (1326 H St. NE) will be open, and are running a 25% off your exam fee special for those who book appointments to take place during the festival (current clients only, does not apply to technician or urgent care visits). It's a good deal if you live nearby (closed streets mean walking Fido down) and your pet won't panic walking in a crowd.

Here's an official press release that organizers put out Friday.

Announcing the 2019 H Street Festival

Washington, DC—The 2019 H Street Festival will take place on Saturday, September 21 from noon – 7 p.m. This will be the best festival ever, spanning 11 blocks of H Street NE and featuring 14 staging areas and more than 250 businesses, restaurants, community organizations and vendors. Come down to enjoy great food, drinks, music, contests, kids’ activities and more!

Organized by H Street Main Street, the annual event highlights the unique spirit of Washington, D.C.’s H Street NE Corridor and is one of the most popular festivals in the region. In recent years, the neighborhood has attracted over 300 new businesses and nearly 2 billion dollars in development from the private sector, which has created more than 3,000 jobs. In a city that boasts numerous events and attractions, the area has become one of the most exciting neighborhoods to live in, shop, eat and hang out. Around 150,000 festivalgoers are expected to attend this year’s festival, which has been named Washington, DC’s best neighborhood festival by Washington City Paper for the past eight years and Washingtonian best festival for the past two years.

Those coming to the Festival to enjoy music, contests and other entertainment, won’t be disappointed. The Festival will feature a variety of shows and some of the best regional and local performers of Go-Go music, R&B, jazz, rock-n-roll, soul music, gospel and more. There will also be dance performances from a variety of cultures and disciplines, martial arts demonstrations and many more non-musical acts.

For those coming to eat and drink, this year’s Festival will offer a bounty of delectable edibles and libations. The culinary offerings will span everything from American staples such as burgers and ice cream to exotic and uncommon dishes from all corners of the world. And for those festivalgoers who come hoping to enjoy some spirits, there will be multiple beer and liquor gardens and bars and restaurants up and down the street will open their establishments to participate.
Other attractions include a pie eating contest, dog fashion contest, pro wrestling demo, Turkish coffee grinds fortune readings and a Earth, Wind & Fire karaoke contest. In addition, Walt Disney Pictures will be showcasing a “Wing Wall” mural installation photo opportunity for their upcoming movie, MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL and CW50 will have an installation for their upcoming show, Batwoman, as well as the couch from the show Friends and a Central Perk set up display.
Festival hours are from noon – 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019. The festival will take place between the 400 and 1400 blocks of H Street NE. Police identified the father and son found dead inside an apartment in the 1100 block of Queen Street NE as 17 year-old Ahkii Washington-Scuggs and 57 year-old Hugh Washington. According to the press release, police responded at 5:49pm Friday to a report of two unconscious males at the address. Neither victim was conscious, and both had gunshot wounds. When emergency responders were unable to find signs consistent with life the transported the victims to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. From just reading the press release you might assume that the wounds were sustained close in time to the MPD visit, but that doe not necessarily seem to be the case.

A story in the Washington Post says police states that MPD's visit to the house on Friday was requested by a relative who had been concerned since at least the prior day. A WJLA segment makes it clear the relative found the victims. WJLA cites a police report that indicates there were no signs of forced entry, and no weapon was found on the scene despite both victims found suffering gunshot wounds to the head. Washington-Scuggs was a a senior at Dunbar.
W.S. Jenks & Son Hardware (910 Bladensburg Road NE) announced yesterday that Little Wild Things, an urban farming operation that specializes in microgreens, shoots, and edible flowers, will set up shop in an unused portion of the Jenks building (906 Bladensburg Road NE). The full press release appears below, but this is an exciting development in that builds on the presence of Cultivate the City's H Street Farms, located on the roof of Jenks. It's also a welcome addition to the stretch of Bladensburg Road NE that separates Trinidad from Carver-Langston. On the stretch was once known largely for used car lots and automotive repair shops, some have floated the idea of revitalization as a sort of garden district.

Jerry Siegiel, president of Jenks, explained “Given the success we have had with Cultivate the City on our roof, the opportunity to add another urban farm to our building was a natural fit.” He added “We enjoy our role in the neighborhood, and we like bringing other businesses into the fold. Particularly, unique business like these farms that not only provide goods and services, but also a blueprint for sustainable living practices.”

Little Wild Things sells its harvest to DC area restaurants, and creates edible arrangements for weddings and other events. But LWT also sells to home chefs. You can find their products in some local stores, and they also offer online purchase with home delivery in the greater DC area through a courier. Little Wild Things is set to move into their new space next month.
LITTLE WILD THINGS TO MOVE TO JENKS BUILDING ON BLADENSBURG ROAD

WASHINGTON – Today, W.S. Jenks & Son (Jenks) and Little Wild Things Farm announced they will be partnering to expand Little Wild Things’ urban farm business at 906 Bladensburg Road. Little Wild Things is scheduled to move in August of this year and will have their own separate entrance on Bladensburg Road. Little Wild Things was founded in 2014 by Mary Ackley. The woman-owned business got their start in the basement of The Pub and the People, a popular Bloomingdale-Eckington neighborhood bar, and more recently has been operating out of the Union Market District Since 2017. As the premier grower of microgreens, shoots, and edible flowers in Washington D.C., Little Wild Things serves many restaurants, bars, hotels, groceries, farmer’s markets, and home chefs throughout the city and has grown a reputation of being the gold standard in urban farming.

“We are excited about taking underused space in our building and adding a very successful local business to the H Street Corridor. As development continues up and down Bladensburg Road, bringing established local businesses to the neighborhood will go a long way in making Bladensburg Road an economic hotspot in our city,” said Jerry Siegel President of Jenks. “This is also a signal that Bladensburg Road is a place that can attract new businesses, an exciting prospect for everyone in this area.”

Little Wild Things will be the second urban farm in Trinidad, with Cultivate the City operating one floor above them on 906 Bladensburg Road. “Given the success we have had with Cultivate the City on our roof, the opportunity to add another urban farm to our building was a natural fit,” said Siegel. “We enjoy our role in the neighborhood, and we like bringing other businesses into the fold. Particularly, unique business like these farms that not only provide goods and services, but also a blueprint for sustainable living practices.”

“We are excited to make our home in the H St. corridor, a vibrant area that allows us to increase the size of operation, while staying close to many of our customers. Moving here is an ideal fit for us and will lead to new and exciting partnerships with other local businesses in the neighborhood,” said Ackley. “Northeast DC is a booming area; we enjoyed being a part of the growth in Union Market, and we are eager to be a part of this blossoming community.”

Rendering of the Baldwin from the building's website

The Washington Post reports that Mozzeria, a Deaf-owned restaurant serving pizza, is headed to 1300 H St. NE. Mozzeria comes to us from two San Francisco-based Gallaudet graduates who run an eatery of the same name in California. The couple do not plan to relocate, but will bring their concept of employing an entirely Deaf staff to their Mozzeria's second location. There's an interesting back story here. Co-owner Melody Stein was once rejected by the California Culinary Academy because she is Deaf, something the school viewed as impractical for someone working in a restaurant kitchen.

Mozzeria seems like a natural fit for H Street NE, already a popular hub for our local Deaf community. Patrons who don't know ASL will be able to order by pointing to menu items, or writing down their choices with the paper and pen available at every table.

The menu will vary a bit from the one offered in the Mission District location, but will be focused on Neopolitan-style pies cooked in a wood-fired oven. We can expect both traditional options like the Margharita D.O.P., and more novel topping combinations including toppings like pear and Peking duck. The San Francisco menu includes vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options.

Mozzeria's new location, which the WaPo article says is anticipated to open in 2020, is in the Baldwin building that stands on the former site of R. The Monkey Wrench

It took a second attempt (the first time I tried they had sold out to a large crowd gathered for the UEFA Champions League Final), but I was finally able to try Bubbie's Plant Burgers & Fizz. Bubbie's currently operates out of the kitchen at Rock & Roll Hotel (1353 H St NE). If you want to try their plant-based take on classic American burgers you'll need to visit on a Thursday (6–9pm), Friday or Saturday night (6–10pm). You can order from any of the bars on any floor of the Hotel. You can also now order through Bubbie's website for pick-up.

The Classic

Bubbie's comes to us from the team behind Pow Pow (1253 H St. NE), which also serves an entirely plant-based menu. I dined with a small group and was able to taste the Classic, the Monkey Wrench, the fries, and the chicken tenders. For the burgers you can choose between a veggie patty or a seitan patty. I liked both and they both held together well. You can also substitute an Impossible Burger patty for an upcharge. But honestly, Bubbie's makes their cheeses/patties/proteins (including the plant-based pork belly) in-house, so they know what they are doing.

The fries

The prices are reasonable too. Sandwiches run $7–10, and the sides are $6–9. It's worth noting that they recently added a new menu item called the Tombstone ($10). It's described on their website as "Melted cashew cheddar & plant-based pork belly bacon, buried inside a buttery brioche bun, deep fried & topped w/ powdered sugar & sweet jam drizzle." I would not be surprised if they added more items in the future. The Bubbie's team are working on securing a permanent space (I'm hoping it's on H Street NE), but it looks like they'll be serving at Rock & Roll for the foreseeable future.

The chicken tenders

The chicken tenders come with agave mustard and sesame ranch dips. The sesame predominates in the ranch, but that's definitely not a bad thing. By the time we finished our food we were already talking about what to order next time, so it's safe to say we were all big fans.
Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar is back at Dangerously Delicious Pies (1339 H St. NE) tomorrow (June 27) from 7:30–9:30pm. What sounds like the beginning of a rather bad joke is actually a fun program created by the Fleet Science Center in San Diego that LabX now brings to DC. During Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar®, local scientists enjoy something we all appreciate: a good conversation in a local bar. Head down to the pie shop, order a slice of drink (or both), and look for the sign that reads “We are scientists. Ask us anything!” The scientists this time around are focused on environmental microbiology and marine biology. You don't need a ticket, and you don't need to register. You just need your natural curiosity.

It you do ask a scientist, you can share your experience on social media with the hashtag #2scientists, and tagging @labxNAS. This is one of several DC area Two Scientists events taking place tomorrow, and the area of focus varies by location.

You can read about previous Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar events in this Washington Post article These nerdy happy hour gatherings will teach you about witches, chemistry and the mysteries of the universe.
Greater Greater Washington has a story on the District Department of Transportation's interim efforts to abate some of the dangerous conditions on Florida Avenue NE. For greater detail you can take a look at DDOT's materials from the June 20th open house. Plans have been in the works (albeit moving slowly) to fix Florida Avenue NE for years. Due in part to public outcry and a series of recent crashes, DDOT has begun implementing temporary measures to address the issue. You've probably noticed some of the pylons DDOT has placed at certain locations along the corridor, but construction on interim measures is set to begin in earnest next month. As described in both the meeting materials and the GGW post, the changes will include repurposing an existing travel lane in each direction between 3rd Street and West Virginia Avenue NE, and repurposing an existing travel/off-peak parking lane in each direction between West Virginia Avenue and Staples Street NE. The hope is that the interim improvements will help to "address safety concerns along the corridor by reducing vehicle speeds, improving pedestrian crossings, and providing protected bicycle infrastructure."

Unfortunately, we'll still have to wait a while before the full project can come to fruition. The Florida Avenue NE Multimodal Project is still in the final design phase and will then move to the procurement phase, with construction slated to begin in spring of 2021.inkedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05350787243002946647noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8835710.post-1210023469797951862019-06-21T06:33:00.001-04:002019-06-21T06:33:37.538-04:00Two Stabbings & an Assault Involving a Knife in Our Area Yesterday

We apparently had three assaults involving knives in the area yesterday, but I only see alerts for two of those. An alert went out yesterday at 11:10am for a stabbing in the 1700 block of Benning Road NE. The original alert (below) contained a lookout, but I don't have any information on the status of the victim.

According to an email from 5D Lieutenant Jeffrey E. Kopp, at approximately 5:50pm a man approached a woman, produced a knife, and then stabbed the victim in the back. The victim "was able to flee the scene, and drove herself to the hospital" and spoke to police. She was reportedly in stable condition as of early this morning. The text of the original alert is below, but Kopp's email differs from the alert just slightly in suspect description details ("30-40 years old, 5'5", medium complexion, stocky build, full beard, mohawk hair style, wearing blue jean shorts and a white t-shirt with green and red graphics").
Early this morning Lt. Kopp sent an email to a local listserve about a third assault involving a knife, this time on K Street NE. About 11:40pm 5D officers arrived in the 1000 block of Bladensburg Road NE in response to a report of an assault. A woman explained that she had been involved in a verbal argument with another woman in the 1600 block of K Street NE. While they were arguing the second woman "produced a knife, grabbed the complainant by the throat, and punched the complainant in the eye." The victim suffered minor injuries, and the suspect was arrested without further incident.
The D.C. Free Summer Meals Program is in full swing serving free meals to all children ages 18 and younger. You do not need to fill out an application to receive a meal. Just head to one of the sites during service hours. Note that hours and days do vary by site. Not all sites will serve all summer long, but some sites will serve meals through August 23.

This year kids can receive meals at more than 250 sites across all eight wards. In a press release Deputy Mayor for Education Paul Kihn explained how it works. “No questions asked. No matter where you go, all meals are free for any child and no ID, forms, or personal information is required.”
Trinidad neighbors are invited to come out this Saturday for June's monthly neighborhood clean-up. Meet at the corner of Montello Avenue and Neal Street NE at 8:30am. You should bring your own gloves, but the organizers will provide the bags (plus coffee and bagels). It should be easy to spot folks with trash bags if you are running late, or just can't commit to the full two hours. Feel free to bring the whole family out. The plan is to pick up trash until 10:30am, and then those interested can head to the Trinidad Rec. Center (1310 Childress St. NE) for an 11am combined Single Member District meeting of the ANC 5D commissioners with districts that include Trinidad. The combined SMD meeting takes place at the Trinidad Rec. the third Saturday of each month. Clean-ups take place before each meeting, but the location varies.
The "model includes total workplace immersion. Interns participate in daily classroom instruction and on-the-job training, where they receive feedback from teachers, job coaches and employers." Through participation the interns gain hands-on work experience at business host sites. Project Search's one-year school- to-work transition program currently operates in over 400 locations in six different countries.

Last year, Jenks hired Vincent Williams from Project Search and he has become an important part of the team at Jenks. After Vincent asked if there was a way to help other kids in the program find good jobs, Jenks, HSMS, and Project Search began coordinating with other local businesses to host a job fair for students.

This Thursday (June 6) from 3–5pm students from Project Search DC will have the opportunity to meet with potential employers. This job fair is a grassroots, community-driven event that is aimed at helping a part of the DC population that often goes overlooked when it comes to employment.
