A look at what's going on in Trinidad, on H Street, and in the larger area north of Capitol Hill.

Red & the Black Reviewed in GW Hatchet
Here's a review of the Red & the Black that appears in the GW Hatchet. I saw this review this morning, but hesitated to put it up immediately. It wasn't the snarky tone that turned me off so much as the fact that the author makes a rather glaring factual error, & she also makes a couple of assertions that cause me to seriously doubt her honesty: (1) I would be very surprised if the average patron of the Red & the Black was actually wearing Diesels (based on the amount of alcohol it sounds like they consumed, I guess it's possible that the author got confused & was referencing her friends' clothing when she mentioned the "Diesel-jeans-clientele"); (2) the bartender tale also makes me skeptical. But for what it's worth, I've linked to the article. And here's an article pointing out the fact that GWU was recently ranked as the 2nd most expensive college in the country.

She does sound too immature to be on H street NW, much less NE.Is this the kind of person that the Red and Black wants to attract?

No, but it is the kind of person who attends GWU. Some of the most self-obsessed spoiled rich kids I have ever seen. You're right, since it was a GWU band night she probably brought the Diesel Jeans crowd with her.
And the Uggs, flip-flops, over-sized sunglasses, popped collars, meshback cap, whatever-the-hell-the-next-stupid-trend-is crowd for that matter.

One of the problems with this article is that any place outside of Georgetown or Dupont Circle is seen as a warzone.
While some drunk, high heel and Diesel wearing "chick" wandering around Oates Street is likely to walk right into trouble late at night after the bars close, the likelihood of one being shot, robbed, assaulted, etc., 3 blocks from Red&Black is actually not that high.
And as I've written before, I first moved to the neighborhood in Sept. 1987 at the height of the crack epidemic, when you heard gunshots most nights, and almost 30 people were murdered in an 18-month period in the "Rayful Edmonds area" north of K Street (which is why it's always hard for me to take seriously people's complaints today about rampant crime, because I can't help but compare it to that period).
whatever.
i'm sorry, what was the galring factual error? i'm not reading carefully enough. all i kept thinking as i read was, i felt like having to apologize to this girl for the fact that H street was too cool to have her here.
I was refering to her assertion that most of the places in what she call the "Atlas strip" are currently in development & don't actually exist yet. Maybe she meant that there just wasn't much around, but my initial reaction was to consider what's been proposed versus what's complete
& open.
new (last few years) places open:
Argonaut
R&B Coffee
H Street Playhouse
Atlas PAC (partly)
Sanctuary
H Street Martini Lounge
Red & the Black
Palace of Wonders
in development:
Dr. Granville's
Beehive
Pug
Am I missing something? Maybe I'm nitpicking. But if you're going to put it in print & purport to be an authority on a topic I'd really like it you could get your "facts" right.
Anyone who's read an article about Joe Englert's efforts over here would at least have the list of places he & his associates plan to open. More than half of those are open. So even based on that, the math doesn't work.
c'mon you guys- she's, like, a totally serious journalist.
what her cab driver probably meant was, that by standing out on the street after the bars closed trying to hail a cab while talking on her cell phone, texting on her Swarovski studded Sidekick while listening to her ipod, flashing her Louis Vuitton purse and complaining about how much money she just put on her daddy's Gold Card-she's bound to get robbed.
I might even think of doing it b/c this girl sounds like she might be that naive.
serves me right for picking such a long user name.

This is not anything new in tone for the Hatchet. A couple of years ago, they did a review of a bar we have in Foggy Bottom. They were sickened that we were located right next to a Thai restaurant. The writer was appalled that you could see the "gross" noodles and curries while eating or drinking on our patio. A $40,000 a year education just isn't worth as much as it used to be!!
Please, God, more articles like this! Anything to prevent these vapid twit's from infiltrating my local bar scene and turning it into A-M on a Saturday night.
Back to the Tom Tom with you!
That article was hilarious. Richard, you know if I see her up here on Oates St. I'll make sure she doesn't get shot (and so will my neighbors). :-)
I think we pay attention to what happens on and what's said about H St. day by day but if you look at the broad trend it just keeps getting better. She can go back to the land of the nasty noodles, no loss.
