National Marathon to Head Down H Street
I just received an email letting me know that the new route for the 2007 National Marathon will take runners down H Street NE from 4th Street all the way to 13th. Pretty cool, no?

Maybe all the cheering will finally drown out the sounds of the preachers on the corner of 8th street!
I understand that overall, the marathon brings $$$ to the city in booked hotel rooms and meals, but what will H street merchants and residents gain for being yet another type of playground? This strikes me as one of those events that just uses DC as a background prop.
I think this is fantastic news. Marathons also have lots of fans, family members of runners, etc along the route to cheer them along. I've done this when friends of mine have run the marine corp marathan. All these marathon watchers will probably go grab a bit to eat or check out some of H Streets stores while they are here!
It would be nice if the corridor looked at this as sort of an 'Olympics Moment'--a goal to rally around. And, just as cities do leading up to the Olympics, each person along the corridor did a bit of sprucing up. The aggregate effect could be dramatic. I wonder how this meshes with the apparently delayed great streets construction.
