A look at what's going on in Trinidad, on H Street, and in the larger area north of Capitol Hill.

Dr. Granville's Soft Opening
Ok, very tired (so please excuse any typos, because beer was involved), but Dr. Granville's was amazing. This was by far the best food I've ever had on H street. I met up with many friends and ran into others. We had beers on tap and beers in bottles (only one lambic [bottled] available right now [strawberry not carbonated, or at least very lightly carbonated], but others are on order). I beleive the beers on tap were Stella, Hop-In (or Hop-Up, I forget), Deconnick (not spelled correctly I think), and a tripel of some sort that we did not try. We also ordered the lambic (began with an "O" and was so lightly carbonated that it was more like a wine), St. Bernardus Biere Blanche Witbier (like the beers I had at Octoberfest in Munich one year), and St. Bernardus Tripel (my strategy is something like if all else fails order the beer with your name in it [my last name is Bernard], and that worked out quite well). I'm interested in a banana lambic that will be there soon because I read something written by a guy who gushed orgasmically about drinking banana beers with Belgians, but that is my own obsession.
We also had the tamarind mussels, the smoked applewood bacon mussels, and the frites with the garlic mayonnaise sauce and the vinegar sauce (I also tried the curry sauce). Everything was excellent. The cream sauces were especially good for fries (frites). If you order mussels you should also order bread to soak up the juices (trust me on this). Top notch food, and not just for H Street. This stuff was amazingly good. Try it NOW so you can pretend to have discovered it. You will come back. Excellent. Excellent. Excellent. Waste your paycheck here tonight (Stellas are cheap and other beers are decently priced)!
p.s. for those who say they don't see Tommy Wells on H Street enough, he was in attendance and ordering up a storm. Also, they serve water in real glasses. Those crappy bottles belong to my friends who hiked it over from SE.

Can't wait to try it!
Inked's been drinked! ;P
hehehe!
Wow it finally open!!!
On another subject
Has anyone seen the mounted police in the area? I saw one going up my steet this morning.
I see the mounted police occaisionally too - Carver Terrace area.
Great seeing you there last night, Elise. I second and my wife thirds your recommendation on Granville's food. We had an excellent meal! I ordered the extremely tasty snapper, served in a medley of tomatoes, olives and various veggies. Good stuff.
i'm digging inky poo's post.
obviously, it's worth going to.
if inked can dig it, it's clearly met standards.
i can't wait to check it out!
woohooo for H street developments!
Just got back from Granville and was very impressed. Excellent moules, beer, and fries. Highly recommended. On different note, is the Rib Tip down the street defunct?
After a disappointing visit to Phish Tea CafĂ© and two years, we finally decided to give H St another chance at dinner. So, we visited Dr. G’s tonight. What a happy surprise…great food, beers, service and ambiance! Our table was able to share a large portion of the menu. Everything we tasted was wonderful: Endive salad, Charcuterie Platter, 2 different Moules (Belgian Tripel & Harissa Broth), Mushroom risotto, Pacific snapper and of course the frites w/ tasty sauces. All great! Comically, one my friends agreed to go to dinner thinking I said 8th St instead of H St. We were all extremely delighted with the outcome. Visit Dr. Granville’s soon, you won’t be disappointed. Thanks for the tip Inked!
Rib Tip is no more. Someone said (I've got no personal knowledge here) that the owner decided not to do the restairant thing. Too bad. I thought it had potential. The space (like Daavi's) is now for rent.
Hey everyone - First time commenting on Frozen Tropics. Just moved to the neighborhood last month - 12th & I.
Just took my lovely lady out last night to Dr. Granville's. WOW! Awesome joint. Very impressed! The frites w/ garlic mayo rocked, and the applewood bacon moules were phenomenal. Recommendation: definitely use their bread for some dipping action in the leftover sauce when you're done w/ the moules.
The ambiance and mood were also cool - they did a great job with the look and feel. The staff and clientèle were cool and easy going.
Highly recommended for those that haven't been.
Be good people!!
Are they open today (Sunday)??
Doc Moores is open on Sunday and my partner and I just came back..Food was EXCELLENT,we had veggie mussles, risotto, snapper, frites with garlic sauce (partner had ketsup)endive salad...I can't wait to go back. What a pleasant neighborhood surprise. Before long the word will spread and the place will be packed to the walls...LOVE IT..
Wow. We went early on Saturday, and loved every bite. I was expecting opening weekend kinks, but the service, timing, and quality were flawless. The only mild complaint was that the AC froze us out.
Personally, the scallops were the highlight. Melt in your mouth delicious.
And as advertised, our total was $35 each. (2 beers each, mussels, fries, risotto, scallops, tax, and tip).
The first of many, many trips.
The in-laws took my wife and I to dinner at Dr. Granville's on Saturday. The mushroom risotto and the snapper were great. I was a little disappointed that they don't serve dessert, but the owner explained to us that they don't have an oven or a freezer, which makes desserts prohibitive, but that they are in conversations with a Belgian chocolatier. Not having a freezer means everything has to be prepared fresh, and it sure tasted like it. The beer selection was enough to make me want to start a notebook and see how long it takes me to try all fifty beers they have.
My wife and I were out on Friday and we were both very impressed with the food and the beer selection. The staff was also extremely friendly and made it a very pleasant experience. On top of that the prices were reasonable as well. Great job guys and we will be back very soon!
We haven't made it yet, but the early reviews will definitely get us there soon!
I hope they start a "beer club" or "Tour of Belgium". I've seen these be very successful at other places--usually names are put on a plaque or a small "prize" is given when the "Tour" is completed by trying all of the various beers.
Cheers,

they don't have an oven or a freezer
Holy cow! I think that's more impressive than anything else I've read. Are Belgian's magical???
An interesting related post here.
Thanks for the review....I can't help but wonder--supposedly some beermakers in Belgium (I think!?) refuse to change their barn roofs because they think that some of the microorganisms that give their beer its distinctive taste live in the wood. The ceiling shown in the pictures here reminds me of that...
I'm jealous of everyone who got food on Friday night! I was excited about the opening, and took some friends over around 11pm- By the time we decided to order (got distracted by the Hop-it bier) they had run out of food! We'll be back though...
To Soflo it hurts: Welcome- You're my neighbor- I'm at 13th and I.
my partner and I also went Friday night around 9 or 9:30. Loved the atmosphere and the food, although they were out of mussels by that time. We will definitely be going back!
My gf and I got there about 9:30pm on Friday night. No food anymore by that time, so we'll have to go back another time to try it. It was packed, and the only room for us was upstairs. The degree of renovation upstairs was a bit shocking, in a bad way -- it reminded me of townhouses that have been gutted for renovation but then were left that way. The two guys behind the bar upstairs were overwhelmed -- credit cards were getting lost and mixed up and so forth, orders were taken and partially filled and then completely forgotten until you reminded them after 7 more minutes standing at the bar that they'd only given you one of the two beers, etc. That said, they were really nice, and I'm sure it's going to be great after they have a little more experience and can handle being popular.
good job Chris. a homerun!
I went last night with a friend. I've heard people say it is best to go to a new restaurant sometime after the opening so all the kinks are worked out by the time you decide to go. We were so excited about another eating establishment opening in our neighborhood, that we threw caution to the wind. Big Mistake.
If, like me, you are not the most patient person, I would wait a few months before trying it out. The place was slammed last night, so I will give the manager and the staff the benefit of the doubt, but the bartender and servers were literally getting on-the-job-training for the computer system during the dinner rush. People were pouring out the door to get a seat and they didn't even have a waiting list for tables as they became available. I'm sure that these things will work themselves out, but it was a little frustrating.
The food was fantastic, though - so I recommend it highly - but maybe a little later!
Not really our side of the Hill, but I saw this on a WP chat with Tom Sietsema:
"Good news for fans of mini-burgers and pizza offered under one roof: Matchbox, the Chinatown hotspot, has just signed a lease for a second location, at 521 8th St. SE"
Another cool place within walking distance.
funny. i had mentioned this place to a colleague who lives in virginia, and she already had it on the radar from dcist.
she can't wait to go, and had no idea about the rock and roll hotel, palace of wonders, etc.
she was very concerned about her security. folks in VA aren't as aware as we are.
i told her to drive there, and be careful.
either way, she's in love with the chef.
and her boyfriend is a mussels guy..
when i left her office, she was trying to make reservations. :o)
good news all around.
i think this, and Sticky Ricke are going to be huge attractions to the folks that want to eat and then hang out at the local nightspots.
very cool that someone knew about the place before i told them.
AND i showed her the menu on frozentropics that was posted a while ago.
she sent the thing to like 20 virginians...
FT is pretty much rocking in the blog community (in dc).
it's a very cool way to get folks to 'inspect' the area.
inked earned 15 points in my book..
i meant, "16 points".
not '15 points'.
sorry for the typo. :p
My wife and I went last night for the first time and were thrilled to find the place packed. The food was excellent, absolutely top-notch. Atmosphere/ambience super, old building/wood/bricks couldn't be better. Service great, if overwhelmed. Sure, a bit hectic, but isn't that what we all want to see on a TUESDAY night on H Street?
I dig it. Only question is what do yall think the shorthand name will become? Doc G's? Doc Moore's? Granny Moore's? G-Mo's? The place is here to stay. Can't wait for all the others to follow.
"Only question is what do yall think the shorthand name will become? Doc G's? Doc Moore's? Granny Moore's? G-Mo's?"
The G-Dawg! or G-Money!
I've been five times and have brought many a friend in toe. Rave reviews all around.
We call it "The Good Doctor's" or just "The Doc's." But that's just us. And we're pretty weird.
I love this website, and wanted to let you know that "belgian" is spelled incorrectly on your homepage. Years of Catholic school -- typos jump out at me. Can't help myself. I would hate to have a simple misspelling detract from the incredibly interesting and useful information.
i finally checked this place out.
great food, great beer.
i wish i could afford to be a regular.
We don't go dine-in there regularly since it is not close to our place. I make it a point to come every time I'm in the neighborhood. We get filled up and usually have leftovers to take home.
