Major Gallery Moves to Florida Ave
The former home of Nifty Thrift, located immediately west of new gallery.
The news is finally out [Express] (with public confirmation) that Connor Contemporary is relocating from Dupont to the 1300 block of Florida Ave NE. They closed a couple of months back & are currently transforming the space to meet their needs. With a little luck we may see the gallery up and running sometime in spring. The numbers I've heard (I believe the article's numbers only cover indoor space) fall around 12,000 sqft. That includes an outdoor space slated for use as a sculpture gallery and possible staging ground for multimedia events. This is not only the largest visual arts development in the H Street NE area, but huge news in its own right. The 12,000sqft site will (as the Express points out) make this the largest commercial gallery in DC. Huge news. Enjoy!

Also, check out the story in this months Hill Rag on the long awaited "Arboretum Place" project going in near Hechinger Mall.
The Nifty Thrifty is gone? When did that happen? Sounds kind of cool. Was that space that big? It would be kind of cool if they use the Turkey Burger space.
Nifty Thrift closed very recently. A circulating rumor points to unsavor activity & also holds that they had had no plumbing for years and were using buckets to...take care of business.
This is near the new uber expensive townhome project correct? Looks like things will change around the million dollar 5,000 sq feet townhomes with elevators :-)

Did they buy the Nifty Thrifty or the body shop next to it? Their press release says 1358-1360 Florida Avenue, NE and mentions it was a body shop.
They bought Singultary Auto Body (down the street from Nifty Thrift & the Turkey Place).
Singletary is actually sandwiched between Nifty Thrift (corner of Orren and Florida) and the Turkey Burger Place (corner of Staples and Florida).
When did Singletary actually close. I remember walking by it on election day and noticing that they had some pretty sweet vintage cars in there. I saw a thirtys era Ford in what looked to be almost pristine shape.
Here's a photo of the Turkey Burger sign, not that it's better...

Well it doesn't have a car diving through it & there is some actual composition, so I'd call that a better shot.
