Dissident Display Event

Thanks to Kerry for the heads up about an upcoming event at Dissident Display. The event, Wild Style: the Exhibition & Book Signing, takes place from 7pm-12am on September 14th. Wild Style, celebrates directer Charlie Ahearn's 25 year old film of the same name and its exploration of urban life through hip-hop, breakdancing, and graffiti art in the early 1980s. On display will be 15-20 photographs, a documentary film, and a special mural painted in, or rather on, the gallery space. The evning will also feature the stylings of Chief Rocker Busy Bee on the mic and DJ Stylus spinning. This event is free. The exhibit runs through October 14th. Dissident Display is located at 416 H Street.

Connor Contemporary's New Home

Major Gallery Moves to Florida Ave

The former home of Nifty Thrift, located immediately west of new gallery.
The news is finally out [Express] (with public confirmation) that Connor Contemporary is relocating from Dupont to the 1300 block of Florida Ave NE. They closed a couple of months back & are currently transforming the space to meet their needs. With a little luck we may see the gallery up and running sometime in spring. The numbers I've heard (I believe the article's numbers only cover indoor space) fall around 12,000 sqft. That includes an outdoor space slated for use as a sculpture gallery and possible staging ground for multimedia events. This is not only the largest visual arts development in the H Street NE area, but huge news in its own right. The 12,000sqft site will (as the Express points out) make this the largest commercial gallery in DC. Huge news. Enjoy!

Roll Call: Big Art, Small Places

A Roll Call article (subscription only guys) mentions a few new additons to H Street:

-Britishink Tattoo Studio and Gallery (508 H Street)
The artist is Paul Roe. I'd heard about this place, and Mr. Roe apparently has a bit of a following in DC (you've got to pick you tattoo artist carefully, after all). The curious can check out the studio during an opening from 6pm-8pm on April 30th featuring tea and the artists (local, and often political, artist Dana Ellyn will be among them) who are displaying their work in the gallery.

-Dissident Display (416 H Street)
These guys have had a handful of events (I haven't made it yet, but I plan to once I finish finals), and their next one is April 27th at 10pm. I know the deal not only in paintings, and drawings, but also in fashion and multimedia works. It sounds like they have lots of interesting shows on right now and upcoming. Definitely on my list to check out.

Jati Lindsay's SCENE (at)NIGHT: Places, Performances and Personalities

In Jati Lindsay's Scene, the Washington area photographer documents several years worth of performances, architecture and lifestyles of the then, late twenty -something hip-hop / soul generation. Featured are images from Bohemian Caverns, Bar Nun, Republic Gardens, DC Nine and Black Cat. Rare images of local and national music personalities such as: W. Ellington
Felton, Raheem DeVaughn, Eric Roberson, J'Davey, Esthero, Saul Williams and others are presented and celebrated.

Adult Playground: Strip Club Stories in Words and Pictures

A deeper investigation into the nightlife theme is uncovered by the photos of Steven Cummings in Adult Playground. Steven's controversial images take him into a popular Washington strip club to document the everyday workings of the average stripper. These tasteful, yet risquÈ images are presented as art, in context with an interview by the artist telling his deepest and darkest stories of experiences visiting these public yet, very private venues. On display are a total of 8 large format Silver Gelatin Print black and white images and video interviews.

Music by DJ's Stylus and Jahsonic (featured in the exhibition)
