Does anyone know if there is going to BE an H street festival this year? Had a great time last year- and went to the Argonaut for the first time that day!

We went by Sweet Treats yesterday and had a couple of ice cream cones.

It's a pretty basic ice cream shop. Good flavors and good prices. The owner was very nice, and I think her daughter may have been learning to run the register.

If you're hankering for a scoop, check it out.

anyone know the hours?

hope she joins the atlas BID so all the businesses on the east side of the street can keep working/marketing together

Hey everyone,

There will be an H Street Festival this year on September 20th. We are in the final permit stage and will be putting planning committees next week. Look for more information on Frozen Tropics!

This is a little off topic here, but my wife and I went to the Argonaut to watch the Euro 2008 finals on Sunday... and MAN was the service bad. Hopelessly confused waitress, no management to speak of. Everyone there was pissed. What is up with that place?

cue ft reader complaints about new ice cream shop, including any possible angle on race along with hyper-sensitive "white"/"new comer" backlash to said angle on race, in five...four...three...two...one...

Inked, I really think it's time for you to start requiring commenters to log on using their e-mail addresses. This is a nice blog, and and people will still comment even if they have to identify themselves.

There are plenty of other forums where anonymous people can vent their frustrations.

My wife and I stopped by yesterday and picked up delicious cupcakes. Everyone should check this place out!

Anon 12:07, the Argo has recently brought on new staff and I encourage folks to be patient. Scott, the owner, can almost always be found there and has put together one of the best food and beer menus in town.

Long live the Argo!

anyone but me find it ironic that the request to have comment reveal email address comes from an anonymous poster? I think an ice cream shop is great but dangerous to my overall well being. I'm such an ice cream junkie. Nevermind cupcakes...

hey wait a minute- why does this ice cream shop serve more chocolate than vanilla? I smell a racist conspiracy!

Leonard (12:07), last year ANC Commissioner, Raphael Marshall, was instrumental with the H St. Festival planning. With his re-election coming up this fall, do you know if he is still going to be involved with the Festival, focused on his campaigning, both or not running for reelection again? Thanks.

White people are just super happy about the ice cream place why would anyone cry racist? It is on opposite side that people cry fowl. Thank god an African American opened it up or there would already be 50 comments...

Good lord, the comments on this blog are unbelievable. I've been meaning to come over to H St. to check it out for a long time but have just been lazy. I've now changed my mind and won't be spending my money there. I'm not leery of the "thugs." I don't hate the "hipsters." It's the FT commenters that I'm deathly afraid of. What turmoil.

I would like to move away from all the hate here too. Off to Petworth, GP or Ledriot Park. Ever read those blogs? Civilized people conversing in a civilized way.

Anonymous said...

Soul Searcher - why arent you complaining about unfair treatment on this thread? Certainly someone violated civil rights here or tried to segregate you someway?

I'm psyched about this place. I've been watching them working on it for a while now, and was hoping they'd open up soon. I had a card from when I met the owner at the festival, but I appear to have misplaced it. I look forward to checking out the menu.
On another note, I wanted to grab a cheesesteak at the Philadelphia Water Ice Factory the other night, but was disappointed to note that they were closed. I don't know if they typically are doing later night hours [maybe they were just closed that night], but if they aren't doing late night hours, I hope they will. I know it's been on the table in the past, and I think there is a demand. The cheesesteaks are awesome [definitely worthy of a craving], so please try one if you haven't.

petworthian and 5:46,

you guys would probably scream and hide under your desks if you saw some of the other discussion threads we have on ft. this is nothing! grow some thick skin if you want to roll with the h street thug bloggers or stay in the cushy confines of notyetworth (city paper coined it, not me). the choice is yours.

we roll a little differently over here on the ne side! no topics are taboo and all speech is free...

here, here, anon 9:10.

we're a bit edgier than the folks in other parts of the city, and for good reason. there's a lot of stuff that needs to be discussed round these parts. and we're clearly not afraid to discuss it.

"notyetworth" might be one of the funniest things I have heard in a long time. Thanks for the belly laugh

Anon 123,
I have the ability to make people log in with Google accounts, but not email addresses generally. Right now I am still having the comments not being sent to me problem [it's been over a month], so that interferes with checking comments out. Currently, I get comment from Monkey Erotica, Tom Alosi, and Myself sent to me. I don't know why Blogger is so selective, but I'm hoping they fix it soon. I even tried a new email address, but it didn't help.

inked said...

I meant Aloisi, sorry. I'd be open to a mandated registration. I don't know if it would help because people are still anonymous. But even if it cut down on the number of comments, I wouldn't be adverse if it improved the quality. But look at the Post and tell me how well that has worked over there.

I think a good compromise would be requiring an online name or 'handle'. But I for one will not comment on this blog if I must do so using my actual name or email.

Why?

Because I hold political and social views that are not the status quo in DC.

And, this being DC, voicing those views in person isn't always a good idea. It can single a person and their family out for all types of retribution. I've seen it happen, enough to know that it's not just possible - it's likely.

You can call my stance cowardly or just reasonably cautious. Either way, I think a lot of people feel the same way.

I've posted a lot on this forum. And I've always been very careful to never be personally insulting or otherwise inappropriate. But I do post viewpoints that are either unpopular or (more likely) when expressed the person expressing the viewpoints is intimidated into silence.

Inked can of course do what she wants, as it's her blog.

I'd welcome a required handle, but requiring actual names and email addresses posted publicly will effectively end most substantive communication on this forum.

Tom A. said...

I feel so special! Maybe you get my emails because I have a google account.

inked said...

Yeah, but other people have Google accounts, and I don't get those emails.

Anonymous said...

On sites like Gawker, you have to register a handle, and then Gawker will block handles after repeat offenses. I think that's a pretty good approach, if it's possible.

Anonymous said...

Anon.9:10, not ALL speech is free here. See Inked's 10:23 comment.
I would no longer participate if we had to register a name of any type, but maybe that's what you want.

One of the most valid things PooPoo (9:27)has ever said here: "we're a bit edgier than the folks in other parts of the city, and for good reason. there's a lot of stuff that needs to be discussed round these parts. and we're clearly not afraid to discuss it."

Racial discussions seem to come up the most frequently and become the most heated. I've seen very little stuff that was directed at any individual (unless occassionally they are a more public individual that owns a business and is putting themselves out there because they want the publicity - too bad if it doesn't always turn out the way they want), but rarely at any individual. Usually its geared to black and white, but that's because that's where the majority of the tension lies.

I think to surpress it would be a HUGE mistake and detrimental to the intent of this blog. But as Hillman said, "Inked can of course do what she wants, as it's her blog."

I'm definitely for making people get a google account.
Did this get sent to you, Inked?

inked said...

Anon 145,
even if people were forced to use an open ID, that wouldn't suppress free speech at all. Open ids aren't linked to email addresses, or Google accounts, or anything. And even if people were forced to use Google accounts, it still wouldn't be a matter of speech suppression. Neither type of id tells anyone who you are, or how to contact you. You're taking two totally different things and confusing them when you mention speech suppression.

Anonymous said...

You should try it - I guarantee you'll see the free flow of discussion drop off. But you can always change it back if it becomes too boring for people.
