WP: Argo Blues

IMG_4992

Well, you've already read about it here, and on DCist, so now you can read about it in the Post. I've been asked to clarify that the stolen money (Which Joe Englert is replacing) consisted entirely of donations to an employee fund. None of that money will go to cover renovations. A portion of the money raised as the Rock and Roll Hotel fundraiser will also go to help employees. And yes, as the article states, the Argo hopes to reopen its patio and upstairs tomorrow night. They will event be serving sandwiches, a salad, and a soup.

the wapo article says $800. Wasn't it reported as $700 here before?

It's between $700 and $800.

Come on Anon 12:22 - do we really require this much detailed reporting from a neighborhood blog? Just how crucuial to you is it whether it was $700 or $800? Inked is not a neighborhood reporter spending all her time researching every last detail for your reading pleasure. She's doing a great service by even keeping us vaguely abreast of neighborhood happenings, so lay off with the irrelevant nit-picking unless you yourself are willing to get out there and start your own fact-strewn, data-filled blog.

Here is the reality of the situation. For the last 22 years, I have owned an average of about 7 restaurants. So, in the span of about 150 years, I have had 3 fires. If we then have been open about 7000 days, we have probably been robbed or burglared about 10 times. So, isn't life very much full?

In 2005, at Capitol Lounge, I was doing about $2,200,000 a year. It took FIVE years to get back to those figures again. Fires are devastating occurances, espeically for restaurants. In America, 90% of all businesses that suffer from a fire never reopen again.

I LOST about $800,000 on the first Capitol Lounge fire because of Lloyd's of London would not pay the claim.

Only the uniformed and the heartless would ever accuse anybody of arson. A restaurant is very much a family business where people work, long hard hours to make not-so-great money. How insulting to all of us to think such a tragedy could be a joke and that getting your locked car stolen is somehow your fault.

Please, let's all be kinder to one another and have some empathy when someone suffers misfortune.

Oh yes, I am a luddite. Can someone post this to the Washington Post linked article for me? I can't seem to make it happen.

Huzzah! to Joe for replacing the stolen money. That's above and beyond the call of duty.
