Tru Orleans Shuttered by Office of Tax & Revenue

come one, come all
Tru Orleans by Philliefan99

Last week brought news that local Cajun restaurant Tru Orleans is facing eviction for unpaid rent (over $40,000) with Washington City Paper reporter Jessica Sidman also covering the extremely long list of ABRA complaints against the establishment. These allegations are varied, but include a recent street brawl involving more than 30 people who had been drinking there (as well as staff members).

This afternoon ANC 6C04 Commissioner Mark Eckenwiler tweeted a photo of a notice that the restaurant has been shut down by OTR for unpaid sales and use taxes.

Sidman reports that Tru Orleans owes in excess of $100,000 to OTR. Sidman says she has a lot more to write about the saga. It looks like things are about to get very interesting.

Let's hope that place gets the boot. It is a beautiful space that could be put to much better use by someone else.

^

I can't see that ever happening. I'd be shocked if it did. Talk about an institution...

I'm personally rooting for Acadiana to buy the space and bring some real Louisiana cooking to this side of town...

i said busboys and poets type restaurant, not necessarily busboys and poets. and if it were busboys and poets, i'd be fine with that - i don't consider them a corporate chain - i'm not sure why you do. as with any new restaurant/bar (see tru orleans, toyland, red palace, etc), you probably want the people running it to have experience. because who wants a place that is going to open and then close in 18 months?

Could someone expain to me why Tru Orleans owes 100,000 in taxes and not D. Pounds the owner?

4:30,
It's standard in a commercial lease for the tenant to be responsible for paying property taxes, and that is part of what Mr. Pounds is suing Tru Orleans for in the $40k suit.

But the $100k is sales and use tax, NOT property tax.

Speaking of Mr. Pounds, why isn't he tending that building at 5th and H? The gardens are a mess, and it just is falling apart. I wish the flower shop would come back.
