New Citi Pizza Closed?

IMG_6328
New Citi Pizza in a 2010 photo

Has New Citi Pizza (504 H Street) shut its doors? A neighborhood resident reports via Twitter that the business hadn't been answering the phone, & now their number is disconnected. Another Twitter user says that they may have halted delivery within the past few weeks (but still answered the phone). Did you ever order from New Citi Pizza? They were my go-to delivery place for a while, and I would always get the Any Way You Want It! deal. Pretty decent slices for not a lot of dough. Friendly employees, & decent reviews on Yelp too.

I am sad to report that an employee told me that the owner died of a heart attack. He further said that the employees do not know how to do the ordering or the books to keep the place open. Very sad news to hear. I will miss them as a good neighbor and vendor.

wow. that's terrible

On a similar note, any idea what's up with Taylor Charles Steak & Ice? They've been closed for a few weeks now, I believe.

Very sad to hear the news and condolences. I remember ordering from the original Citi Pizza for dinner the first night I moved into my place down here, and always ordered from them from then on. They were a solid pizza place.

Oh man. That makes me sad. I loved their wings.

On another note, is Chupacabra closed? I know that have strange hours, but went then on a Thursday afternoon and they were closed.

Very sad about Citi Pizza. Re: 9:32 - it seems Steak & Ice has closed and will re-open as a new concept.

Looks like Taylor Charles has been closed for a while and isn't sure if they will re-open.

Count of businesses closed on H street is growing.
- Tru Orleans
- Taylor Steak and Ice
- Souk
- New Citi Pizza

Apologies about the Taylor Steak and Ice story, I meant to do a piece on that over the holidays but family time took precedence. I was able to get two pieces up. I don't have much more info than you see on the (brief) Washington City Paper link provided by Anon10:30, though.

Sad to hear about New Citi. They were a solid delivery choice and for many years the only thing available.

I liked Charles Taylor but the name was confusing and frankly, the food was too diet destroying to have more than once in a blue moon.

Anybody looking for a hoagie fix should try Mother Rucker's on Bladensburg. That place is a hidden gem.

Some good pizza options. Red Rock has great pizza. Pizza on H is doing brisk business. Have not tried the pizza at liberty tree yet.

Thank you solving the mystery even though it had a terrible ending.

We were big fans. To me, it was the best value pizza in the neighborhood. Very very sad.

I liked New Citipizza's pizza and wings, although for both I've moved to Sicilian Pizza recently. But I'd tried to call NC two weekends ago to place an order recently and got no answer, and now I know why. Very sad. I hope the owner's family is OK.

Citi Pizza and New Citi Pizza were our primary sources of pizza for the last 8 years - sorry to hear what happened. Indeed, when we called about 4 weeks ago, the phone just rang and rang. A couple days later, they were open again. But then by last week they were closed for good.

That has forced us to try Sicilian Pizza a few times. The pizza and wings are pretty good, but seemingly several bucks more expensive, and a bit slower, than NCP.

Sicilian all the way! 2 xl one topping pies for 22 bones - sold!

Sorry to hear about the guy at Citi Pizza.

Pity he didn't train the employees to do certain jobs.

But many small businesses only last with owner.

As for some of the other failures, that happens,
90% of all new startups die in 18 months, if we
have had so many successes, it's a big deal.

MPD will be very sad that Citi closed.

If you have not tried it, Sicilian is really good take out pizza. Tiny storefront on Florida near West Virginia ave so lots of neighbors might not even know about it (took me a few years to try it). It's one of those places whose quality belies it's "modest" looks. Also seems popular with Gallaudet students.

I think we're pretty covered for pizza: The other places mentioned - H&Pizza, Red Rocks, and Liberty Tree are all good too. It's not trendy, but could we get a good sit-down Chinese place, please??

For Chinese...At the risk of exposing a secret - Panda Gourmet on Bladensburg Road. Place is ridiculously good. You won't be disappointed. Mind blowing Chinese food.

yep! panda is AWESOME! i'm a bit worried about divulging that little secret as well. i don't want to have to compete with their other customers for quick delivery of HEALTHY chinese food (their stuff isn't oily like other places).

also, there's a chicago based place called Shark's Fish and Chicken opening up at the old wendy's bldg. on bladensburg and V street, NE (near panda). i believe they'll be up and running this spring. apparently, they have quite a loyal following. and a pretty interesting video on youtube. anyway, i can't wait to try them!

Wait,
I thought Panda Gourmet did not deliver (that's what they told me when I called once upon a time). Yelp also says no delivery.

But I do enjoy delivery of healthyish Chinese food from Panda of DC (on West Virginia). Are you guys talking about the same place?

Well, for those of you who are fairly new to te neighborhood, like the blog author, Citi Pizza closed a couple of years ago, and came back as New Citi Pizza. Perhaps this will happen again and it will be called New New Citi Pizza.

You'd really have to be a long time local to know about this though....may have been 10 years ago...

9:02,
I remember Citi Pizza. The change was more recent then that. Can't say how long off the top of my head.. I've been here well over a decade.

inked said...

I meant more recent than 5-10 years, not two years (no coffee yet). New Citi Pizza opened in early 2008.

Anonymous said...

That's pretty recent compared to many of us who have lived here for 20 years.

BaoBao said...

Pssst...Panda delivers..:-) 3 mile radius!

BaoBao said...

And no, Panda Express is not the same as Panda Gourmet. We are talking about Panda Gourmet here. Delicious, wonderful Panda Gourmet.

nobody gives a damn how long you've lived in the neighborhood. Sitting in one spot for several years is not something to brag about, whether it's here or Lake Como, sweetheart.

If anything, it means you had much, much longer to improve the neighborhood and were terribly ineffective at it. Cheers!

I'll have to try Panda. Til now, I haven't found a Chinese place anywhere within a couple of miles (including all the places on Pennsylvania Ave/Barracks Row) that doesn't suck.

Anonymous said...

I don't see why people know that you've lived in a neighborhood longer than them. Clearly you'll know more about the neighborhood. It's not a competition. But it's clear that some of you have inferiority complexes.

Anonymous said...

I definitely know more about te neighborhood than the blog author. I've lived here longer. #winning

Trolls suck panda balls

Anonymous said...

Umm, I don't think these are trolls. They seem like real people with real opinions and really bad grammar.

AWESOME. So, with your additional knowledge, you can regale us with stories of open air drug dealing, defecation on the sidewalks and in the alleys, etc.

Ooh! Can you tell me about the smoldering body my realtor said they fished out of the basement of the abandoned rowhouse to down from where I bought?

I am giddy with anticipation! Educate me, O Homer of H street!

Word to the wise, Urfa Tomato Kabob in Chinatown is the best delivery pizza in our radius.

LilBoosie said...

Anon 4:02 - hey, that's what gives the neighborhood its character! And we must preserve character at all costs for when something like that is lost, it's gone forever.

Anonymous said...

@col brentwood Urfa closed

Chupacabra is opening in March

le poo said...

oops. i was referencing the panda up at NY and bladensburg - the one that doesn't deliver. sorry!

BaoBao said...

Poo - it does now!

Col. Brentwood said...

Urfa is totally open, don't believe anonymous lies! It's available on Eat24.
