News from The Voice of the Hill

Two mentioned items of interest for ANC 6A & the larger H Street Community:
-The possible moratorium on the sale of chilled singles on H Street.
-A drug house on the 800 block of F Street was seized by federal marshals. This should definitely be good news for anyone who passes through the general area from F to H Streets & from 8th to 11th Street.

* Also helping out H Street (but not mentioned in the Voice of the Hill article) is an increased police presence at 19th & Benning Road. The police have parked their (staffed) van in the location as a deterrent to crime.

There have been a number of speeches, news stories, and even a comment from City Councilwoman Sharon Ambrose about the number of liquor licences along the H street corridor. Despite the efforts of ANC 6A commissioners and a ton of taxpayer money spent for a lawyer, there are even more liquor licences on the corridor. You just will have more opportunities to buy and sip your single sitting at a bar or table.

Liquor licenses are not a bad thing. They are necessary for any successful entertainment corridor. The key is to have responsibly run bars and restaurants. I was at Rose's Dream last night and I didn't see any rowdy patrons causing problems. I'm sure the same thing could be said of Phish Tea (it may have service issues, but its patrons are unlikely to start any street fights). Joe Englert, who is openning two bars in the 1200 block of H, is known for his willingness to work with the community (he has already met with Wylie Street residents). Alcoholic beverage licenses are not the enemy. They are simply a means by which to reward responsible businesses and to punish those businesses that offend the community.

Having lived in Adams Morgan at one time, I think that too many liquor licenses are a bad thing. At X point, the rents become too high for anything but alcohol serving places to make a go at it. The community will lose the small markets, hardware store, and barbershops. Somehow the nail salons seem to hang on. The nice small community bar starts having live music and becoming more club like and drawing a very large crowd...I know it sounds like that can't happen to H but it can, and we have an ABC Board that never closes a place, unless at least 2 murders occur on the dance floor.
