Have anyone eaten at Phish? How was it? I've heard the fish curry is good. Anything else?

Been there three times (willing the first time, peer pressure the second two times). If you're looking for a really great place with excellent food and great prices, go to the Carribean place across the street from Phish Tea. Plus, the people that own it (family owned and run, they also own Rose's Dream upstairs) are cool. It looks like carry out (sans the bullet proof glass), but you're welcomed to go upstairs to Rose's to sit down and enjoy your curried goat or snapper and then chase it down with a Red Stripe. Danny and Kia are the bartenders and they serve up a rockin' rum punch (secret recipe!) as well as good conversation.

I've been to Phish Tea twice. I only ate the second time I was there, and I only had an appetizer. They served my hot tea at room temp. The aapetizer was okaay, but their Phish Tea (soup) is supposed to be good. I know that the owner has said he had problems finding good waitstaff, and I think some of their service issues are also related to the fact that the bulk of their business does not seem to come from in-house diners. I expect that this will change now that the fences are down. I know that they have a buffet Sunday brunch for around $10.00. This might be a good way to sample a few dishes while sidestepping any service issues. I have not been to Caribbean Kitchen, or Rose's Dream Bar, but maybe I should go.

I think the Caribbean carryout across the street is vastly over-rated. It has come highly recommended and after eating there once (I went there once before but after waiting 5 minutes or more to be acknowledged and served I left) I have to believe that people's expectations aren't very high when it comes to neighborhood establishments. I would much rather it in the one-step-up-from-carryout Caribbean place on Rte. 450 in Bladensburg, across from the Purple Heart Thrift Store and the PG Bladensburg Library Branch. 10x better and you can sit down (even though it's not glorious, basically a carry out with tables).

Elise, that's a beautiful photograph!!!!!

My mistake, the place under Rose's Dream is Caribbean Best, not Caribbean Kitchen (that's the sign on the empty space in the 1200 block of H Street).

I don't have a car so I can't check out that place very conveniently that you speak of, Richard. I live off H Street so end up walking to most places. But gee, that place across from Purple Heart sounds so good - another reason to buy a car! And then I won't be limited to all these crappy places on H Street that I currently walk to. Thanks again for the advice, Richard - you're the best and we're so lucky to have you as part of our H Street community!!
