More Info on the Wholesale Food District Coming
I had planned to spend last Saturday morning taking pictures and recording info for the various businesses that occupy the wholesale food district (address & retail/whole only status). Unfortunately, my plans were thwarted by the rain. So I only have a very partial list of businesses, and almost no photos. I'm going to try to go back this weekend and see what else I can put together. One problem I encountered, as I has mentioned before, is that many (most) of these places don't bother to post signs telling you whether or not they are open to the public. For such businesses I am recording phone numbers so that the wholesale/retail status can eventually be ascertained by calling. But even the few places that are clearly open to the public (and I am not talking about the DC Farmers' Market, where every vendor sells to the public) offer so much interesting stuff you just can't get at the grocery store. For example, two stores on Morse, A Litteri's & the African wholesaler two doors down, sell items as diverse as fresh sandwiches, gourmet cheeses & sausages, goat & berber.

I came across your site when I was looking for information about Bloomingdale and Eckington. We are thinking of buying a home in the Trinidad, Bloomingdale and Eckington area, but dont know too much about it. We live in Petworth right now and moved there 6 yrs ago when the area was a fair bit rougher. Your neighborhood seems to have more of a sense of community than ours. I guess my biggest question as a woman with a small child is, how safe is the neighborhood? And are there young/new families there?
Thanks.
Hmm, I live on Florida Avenue. I suspect that the high volume of fast moving vehicles tends to discourage families with young children from buying on my street. I do always see lots of children playing outside in Trinidad and Old City #1, aka Near Northeast (where H Street is located). In answer to your question about crime, I can say that I have lived here 3.5 years, and I have never had any more of a problem than having my weedeater walk off when I (carelessly) left it sitting outside unattended. Most of what I see in the crime report is theft from auto, or home burglary. You might want to contact someone from the MPD's 5th district. You could also contact the anc commissioners for areas you are interested in. I see a lot of change all around me right now. H Street is coming back to life. There is tons of development near the NY Ave metro station, and there are plans for luxary condos right by Hechinger Mall. I think that there are many people in this area who care a lot about the community and definitely willing to be involved in building it. I also suggest you check out the Truxton Circle based blog "In Shaw" (link near the bottom of local links). FYI -it's not in my area, but I hear that there is a very notorious open air drug market at 1st & V.
Huh? I live at 1 and W NW, and there is no open air drug market. There are a couple of dealers who hang out at 1 and U, but not too often. In terms of safety I would probably rank Bloomingdale, Eckington (W of N Capitol, N. of Florida), and W. Trinidad in the same league. IMHO, Truxton Circle S. of Florida seems a bit rougher, being close to the public housing at Sursum Corda. Just my opinion.
I wasn't trying to steer anyone to Truxton Circle. I just think that "In Shaw" does a good job of expressing what it is like to live in that kind of neighborhood. The open air drug market comment is based on 3 things:
1. 5th district crime reports
2. statements from a police officer that there is an open air drug market at 1st & V.
3. The fact that Prevention Works (needle exchange) goes to a site over there.
Maybe this market is not particularly active, but it sure sounds to me like it exists.
