A look at what's going on in Trinidad, on H Street, and in the larger area north of Capitol Hill.

A Grocery Store at 3rd & H
You've probably noticed the demolition of the boarded-up gas station at 3rd & H Street (across from the Abdo condos). You've probably also heard that there are talks about a mixed use development with housing upstairs & possibly a grocery store (hence the Harris Teeter rumors) downstairs. It would make sense to put a grocery store in the space (local coverage is not good for grocery stores). At 6th & H you've got Murray's (which though much upgraded from what it was a few years back) probably won't do it if you need anything other than basic fruits, veggies, milk, eggs, butter, or sandwich bread. The Farm Fresh market in the 600 block of H Street offers locally produced breads, veggies, fruit & cheeses, but it only operates on Saturday mornings & is closed in the winter. You could walk to the DC farmer's market on Florida, but there again you have limited hours (although there is an extensive selection of meats & the veggies & fruits are decent). If you want gourmet sausages, or cheeses, you'd better get to the Florida market before 2pm of Saturday, because that's what time Litteri's closes. The next closest shopping is the Safeway at Hechinger. That Safeway is hit or miss. Frequently the produce is less than stellar & sometimes you get fresh herbs there, but sometimes not (plus it's over a mile from 3rd & H Street). Beyond that you'r either into Eastern Market, Yes! Organic Grocery, or you're taking the metro to Giant.

Who might have more info on this site?
Karina Ricks? ANC commisioners?
I would ask the commissioners. I think things are pretty much just in flux right now.
You forgot to mention the frozen meat at Murray's! If you need frozen meat, it is the place to go.
A grocery store at 3rd & H would be a dream come true.
Yup, saw the tanks (or something) being dug up this evening. Also saw the paper's down in the windows of Taste of Jamaica...looks like it should be open soon.
I just figured that Murray's Famous meats spoke for themselves. I did however, neglect to mention the ample supply of neon hued pseudo juice drinks Murray's offers. Yes, they have finished painting the inside of Taste of Jamaica. I expect that they will open soon.
At a recent zoning hearing the owners of this site, Sinclair Petrolium, publicly stated that they're in talks with Harris Teeter to build a grocery store on the site. They indicated a desire to add housing above the store and the Department of Planning showed a willingness to allow for an exception to the very strict FAR guidelines so that this could happen.
This doesn't mean that this is what will happen here. But it was public testimony, on the record. Let's hope things happen soon.
That would be great. I had heard that these talks were so preliminary that it would be misleading to characterize them as negotiations (i.e. very very preliminary). In the end, I'm sure that's going to shape up to be a great block because it will need accomodate lots of residents & the employees from the SEC building. That will undoubtedly mean some places to eat & probably also make it easier for small shops to make it. A grocery store would be good & we could use a gym nearby (when this first made my wishlist a couple of years ago I thought it was impossible, but now it doesn't sound so out there).
I truly believe that the neighborhood could use another grocery store. The Safeway in recent weeks has become less than stellar with items. Produce can be old, one week you may find gourmet mushrooms, then the next you don't. I think we need a place that will carry items on a regular basis. I do love the farmers market and am there every Saturday that I can be. I do believe in supporting local farmers to maintain their businesses.
There is also a local group starting a co-op grocery store on H St., which would provide high quality produce and no less then 30% locally produced products. It's called the H Street Community Market. They're planning a 6,000 sq ft. store, open 7 days a week. They are already collecting memberships, which are $100/ household for life. The $100 gets you 1 vote on how the store is run, and discounts in the store. They plan to open in 2008, but are still looking for the ideal location on H St. Check them out and become a member - the more members the more likelihood this store will open. www.hstcommunitymarket.org
