Parking Restrictions in an Entertainment Corridor

Here is a Washington Post Article on newly implemented parking restrictions in Adams Morgan. H Street will likely soon have changes to its own parking restrictions (I don't recall the precise proposed hours at this moment). The crowds in Adams Morgan are a far cry from anything we see on H Street, but I still think we can look at how they handle their parking issues.

This past February, ANC 6A requested that parking restrictions be removed on H Street. I just received a letter from Mr. Noble, from the District Department of Transportation, that states:

“…the Traffic Services Administration has made an independent determination to remove the installed No Standing or Parking, 7:00 to 9:30 am, and 4:00 to 6:30pm, Monday through Friday. The rush hour signs will be removed from the north and south sides of H Street, N.E. between 3rd and 14th streets.”

“…DDOT will install all the pavement markings and signing changes first before removing the rush hour restrictions. We anticipate starting this work in middle of May 2005 with completion of the project on or about June 1, 2005.”

While the letter was dated May 20, 2005 and I received it on June 2, 2005 – DDOT looks to be a tad behind on the implementation. But, we have it in writing. I will be posting the letters on the ANC 6A list service. As a result of this change, there will be 337 additional parking spaces on H Street for business and customers that were previously restricted during rush hour.

Great work by you and the ANC, Joe. In the meantime, since they are a little slow implementing the actual removal of the signs, do you think they would consider suspending enforcement?

I don't think so -- safety is going to be the key issue. Our friendly Maryland drivers are going to need to see the signs that these lanes are now closed to traffic during rush hour.

Joe -

I got an update from Derrick here at DDOT stating that the parking
restrictions should be down this week. FYI.
