Last night I saw two banners hanging up at the space that once housed the Family Food Center (900 block of H Street). One announced that something would be "OPENING SOON," & the other advertised a sale on brand name bedding. No word yet on the new store's name.

Hmm, something along the lines of Mattress Discounters perhaps? How weird to put a banner out advertising a sale on brand name sheets before you:
A -have any inventory (hard to mark down those prices).
B -have no sign for your store.
I definitely smell a discount store.
Was this really spelled "openning"?
Anyway, in the intermediate term there will be more stores like Family Dollar, and fewer stores like Apartment Zero. For the analysis, check out my blog entry from March 3rd, in the archive, about H Street and H Street Main Street. (http://urbanplacesandspaces.blogspot.com
Richard,
Sorry, the misspelling was my fault. I'm not so good with the typing thing sometimes.
Why can't we get upscale, artsy stores on H Street instead of Family Dollar and discount stores? I thought we were trying to improve the neighborhood?
I'm not sure that anyone is actually courting stores like Family Dollar. I think most people would like to see some more upscale stuff on H. the issue is that the small independent stores need to see that it is worth it to come here. My hope is that some of the places we have opening up will create some foot traffic. After we have foot traffic...then I think we'll see some more good stuff (hopefully it won't all be the chains that can afford to pay top dollar).
