It's a shame, seems like the yogurt guy isn't showing up. I really wonder if there isn't more that could be done to 'market the market' so to speak so people could come support it.
I know this is off topic but - what are some areas in Trinidad to avoid? You implied that Queen St. wasn't the safest area in one of your earlier posts (the one about Wylie St.). What other areas are relatively unsafe in Trinidad?
Rob, the goat cheese guy has been absent recently due to staffing issues. He is set to return next week. However, there was yogurt available at today's market (Endless Summer was selling it out of the same cooler as the fresh Mozzarella). It would be good to get bigger crowds at the market. Flyers have been distributed in parts of the neighborhood & at nearby schools. tell your friends & neighbors to go.
Anonymous, I wouldn't say that there are necessarily areas to flat-out avoid (I have walked down Queen Street plenty of times). I would say that we have some problem areas. Generally this means that there is a problem house, or corner (frequently associated with a house) on a particular street. Queen Street has had some issues, Penn has had some issues. One thing to remember is that Trinidad once had some pretty rough stuff go on. Programs like Operation Crackdown (coupled, of course, with the dedication of residents) have really played a big part in cleaning the area up. If you want information about specific trouble spots I would suggest that you: 1. attend a PSA 504 meeting (you could ask about particular trouble spots, but it will probably be discussed anyway & sometimes they even map recent crimes). 2. talk to an ANC Commissioner. 3. ask the police. (the real answer is to attend a PSA 504 meeting since residents, commissioners & police will all be there).
Beyond that I would just suggest that you not be paranoid, but remember that we are living in a city. It is best to exercise caution, particularly when walking at night. Lock you car doors & don't leave items that may be of value to others visible in your car. You should make an effort to know your neighbors & your neighborhood (again, go to the PSA meetings). And remember crime is down in the area.
Yeah, it's funny I've never had a serious problem in Trinidad. I've left a lamp out back of my house for like 2 weeks now and no one will steal it (it's nice!). My car's never been bothered. And the punks that sit around and have nothing to do all day (but perhaps sell drugs and steal cars) on the 1300 block of Orren, I just look them in the eye and no one gives me any trouble, and I'm not a big guy. Still I tend to walk down a different street than to go down that block. On the yogurt guy I'm glad he will be back...I heard the thing about the staffing issues and didn't know if he was gone for good. I've given the ladies I know on my block here fliers for the market...I hope they go.
Thanks for your reply! Also, how is the condo market in Trinidad? I cant even afford a home here, except for a fixer-upper which I wont have the time to renovate. Are there any condos in Trinidad? And how much to they go for>
Urban Land Company put in a few units in the 1000 block of Florida (1014 I think). If I remember correctly they sold for around $285-$300, but I'm not certain about that. I haven't heard much about condos going up in Trindad, we're mostly just seeing houses changing hands right now. There is a lot a rehabbing of previously vacant homes. There are, however, plently of condos going up near the New York Ave metro. If you ant affordable you might look at theNew Yorker.
