I wish it was something nicer like a Wegmans, Trader Joes or Fresh Fields. Tweety is pretty much just a expensive Safeway.
I am so excited. Harris Teeter is not at all like a Safeway. And who the Hell can afford Whole Paycheck (I mean Whole Foods)for regular grocery shopping? HT's meat dep't is awesome and produce has lots of unusual stuff. I saw this posting and screamed out that I will never have to leave DC again. Work here, live here, eat here, and now shop here. This would be a very welcome addition to the city.
Agreed. There's a huge difference between the HT at Pentagon City and the Safeway at 14th ST NE. The city loses plenty of sales tax revenue from me hopping on 395 to head out to VA for most purchases and to have a decent supermarket within walking distance would be amazing. Still skeptical though.
Not as cool as a Trader Joe's, but a hell of a lot better than the Safeway and more convenient than going to the Giant on Rhode Island. The Harris Teeter in Ballston is pretty nice and has a much nicer selection of foods than either Safeway or Giant. They have fresh sushi, good bread, and better produce than Safeway or Giant.
haven't they already committed to opening a ht store in se, near patomac metro? i wonder if these means they are reconsidering that site. i don't see them opening two stores so close to each other given there are no others anywhere in the city.
I think Harris Teeter supposedly wants to open 12 new stores (although maybe they have already opened some of them) in the DC metro area & they are definitely gunning for DC. I'm happy to see a quality grocery store to that location. I wonder what effect this will have on Murray's. I have heard that having two grocery stores very near each other does not necessary hurt the stores (provided you have enough potential patrons nearby) because certain people will habitually favor one over another. Plus, Murray's (although it now offers a much better selection than the days of neon green banas & rotting mangos) is almost like a niche market. Murray's is cheap. You can walk out with a decent amount of stuff & still spend under 10 bucks. I suspect that some people who currently go to Murray's would shop at the Harris Teeter, but would likely also continue to shop at the Murray's. The market for the Harris Teeter would probably be either people that shop at the safeway in SE/the Safeway at Hechinger, people that shop in the suburbs, & the people who will live in those new condos. Sound right? I do hope that having a Harris Teeter nearby will prompt the Safeway at Hechinger to fix its produce section. My problem with Safeway's produce isn't the overall selection, but rather that the availability is very undependable. I want to go to a store that is going to have a consistant supply of items like fresh herbs.
For those interested in letting Harris Teeter know that H Street wants it as well, you might want to try sending the company a quick email. Go to www.harristeeter.com and click on the "Contact Us" link at the top of the page. You never know, if the community shows a great deal of interest in the possibility of Harris Teeter coming to H Street, that might be enough to push the decision makers over the top.
Being born, raised and still living around the corner from the Atlas, I am psyched about Harris Teeter's coming to the area. I find that the presentation as well as the freshness of the produce and meats at Harris Teeter is above Safeway and Giant's. They have products that in the past would take me on a long journey to find in the DC area. I don't shop that much at Whole Foods because they are super expensive, overrated and not convenient. Trader Joe's has cheap wine but I don't like to purchase prepackaged and frozen foods. I welcome Harris Teeter's into the DC area. If Safeway want to stay content and not compete then that is their choice.
Hi, I find your blog very interesting. I love Harris Teeter . Harris Teeter is a chain of food markets. The company provides online shopping as well; it is possible through Harris Teeter Express Lane. People can easily order online and their shopping is done for them, it is needed just to go and pick it up. Besides, there are many discounts provided online for those customers who are the members of e-VIC. On this great site www.pissedconsumer.com you may look up the customers’ reports about the markets.

In fact, a store is also opening in Adams Morgan, so I think they are finally looking to penetrate the DC market.
