The H Street Farmers Market

Here is an article from the Post (via the ANC6A listserv) on the importance and attraction of farmers markets. The article's timing was perfect because I have been planning to post some nice photos of the H Street Farm Fresh Market (600 block of H Street NE). The H Street Market is special because, as a part of Farm Fresh Markets, all the vendors grow their own produce, raise their own meats, make their own cheeses (with local products), or bake their own bread with local products. You can ask the farmers exactly when something was picked & some farmers even bring in photos of their farms. Shopping at this farmers market is a far cry from shopping at the Safeway. This market is also special because it is our neighborhood market. Each Saturday morning the lure of the market attracts people from all over the neighborhood and brings life to what would otherwise be an empty parking lot. Currently the market is in full swing & there is a lot of produce available.

This past weekend one farm demonstrated hydroponic techniques for a local youth gardening group.

Farmers offer a variety of foods that extend far beyond the bountiful prouduce.

Pies (above) & breads (below) are among the non-produce offerings.

And who could forget the fresh cheeses?

The market offers a little something something for everyone & the prices are great.

Since I wrote this I have come across some other articles of interest. Here is an article on Community gardens in low income areas (to learn about a local community garden group follow this link). Here is an article from the NY Times on a place that sells a wide variety of tomatoes (just like those available at the H Street market).

Great Pics!
I particularly like the one of the garden club's lettuce. That looks like a very interesting project.
