Hours for the Argonaut

An employee of Joe Englert kindly supplied these hours (in the comments) for the Argonaut:

4pm-2am Tuesday thru Thurs
4pm-3am Friday and Saturday
closed mondays in August (will be open 7 day/week Sept. 1)

If you haven't been yet, you should definitely go. I haven't tried the food, but the atmosphere is laid back & cool, & the beer is cheap. I'm just happy to have a place nearby that my friends will agree to check out on a Saturday night (as opposed to treking to Adams Morgan, Dupont, or U Street).

My wife and I had dinner there last night and we were very happy with our food. I agree the menu is on the heavy side and could use some lighter alternatives - simple salad or even a good BLT.

FYI - Englert told me that Mr. Pittman, from Linden Neighborhood Association, has protested all of his new establishments with the ABC Board. Apparently, the chief compliant is that there will be an over concentration of taverns and restaurants if all the liquor licenses are approved.

FYI – part II. After two months of public meetings, the ANC and Englert entered into voluntary agreements for each of the new establishments earlier this month. These agreements generally set the terms for noise, operations and exterior maintenance (hey- we didn’t pick the color of the building…).

At the meeting this past Tuesday night, our ANC 6A Alcohol Beverage Licensing Committee modified the agreements based on legal input from the ABC Board. In short, due to the recent change in liquor laws, some of our existing provisions were not in compliance with the liquor regulations. We will be considering these recommendations from the ABL committee at our next ANC meeting – September 8 at 7:00pm at Miner Elementary.

Assuming we (the full ANC Commission) accept these changes (which in many cases strengthens our standard agreement in terms of noise), we will ask Englert to sign the amended voluntary agreements. Based on our working relationship with Englert, we don’t expect that he will object resigning the agreements.

Why is all this important? The elected Commissioners that serve on the ANC represent the community. DC agencies, as required by law, must give “great weight” to ANC recommendations. With respect to liquor license voluntary agreements, our ANC spent over six months last year – using six public meetings and two full Commission meetings – to solicit, design and implement a standard voluntary agreement for taverns and restaurants.

We did this in anticipation of the development of the H Street corridor. Our goal is to create the best voluntary agreement in the city to ensure that new owners/businesses will be excellent neighbors. These voluntary agreements are attached to the actual liquor licenses. If a business fails to maintain the standards contained in the voluntary agreement, the community can use that lack of compliance as a reason not to renew the liquor license.

Anyway, got side tracked on a morning rant. Back to the start – good food with a pool table!

...Mr. Pittman, from Linden Neighborhood Association, has protested all of his new establishments with the ABC Board....

Bobby Pittman launching a protest? Wow, what a shock! This guy is a walking protest. I've watched him challenge every reputable establishment that has tried to set foot on H Street.

Someone needs to point out to him that he is not an elected official and he does not speak for the community. If he wants to represent the community, he should run for ANC commissioner.

Re: ANC6A. Keep up the great work Joe. It's too bad that some of us, I suppose me included, make even more "work" for you. Your leadership is appreciated.

It was nice of you Joe F not to mention the food or decor. Will your wife return?

The place is a beer joint with Savation Army furniture and soggy sweet potato french fries. As long as your expectations are not real high, the place is ok, if all you want is a burger and a beer.

I haven't been, but as long as the beer is cold, the clientele isn't scuzzy or dangerous, and the food is good, I'll go there.

I love the atmosphere, and the food it pretty good for a bar. The nachos need more cheese on them but other than that...I look forward to becoming a regular and bringing friends with me.

A beer joint with salvation army furniture is really my idea of heaven. What were you expecting, $15 drinks with tapas? This is not Dupont, thank goddess. And there's not a damn thing wrong with the sweet potato fries.

A beer joint with salvation army furniture is my idea of heaven! If you want $15 drinks and tapas go to Dupont. And the sweet potato fries are lovely. That's how they are supposed to taste. Good goddess! Doesn't anyone know what makes a good neighborhood bar anymore? Let the rest of us have some fun.

Yes, my wife and I plan on returning. Honestly, I thought the food was good. Nothing on the menu is over $10. It is was it is - good, basic food and a nice place to watch TV. I don't mind either the color or the interior.

I thought my catfish sandwich was great! I'll definitely be back regularly, especially once football season starts.

Finally, a quality neighborhood bar. I've grabbed a meal and a drink there three times now. It's a comfortable place with a friendly bar and a capable kitchen. If you're looking for twin petit filet, look elsewhere. If you're looking to grab a drink, a sandwich, and what I find to be exceptional sweet potato fries, come to the Argonaut. What better way is there to meet some neighbors
than over a pint.

The Argonaut is great! It has a great neighborhood vibe and lots of neighbors were there chatting it up.

One problem, though: 411 didn't have their phone number, which seems odd.
