Examiner on Safeway Renovation
In case you haven't heard, the Safeway at Hechinger Mall is being renovated. Here's a story on the project from the Examiner.

They don't have a choice, given that there'll soon be a Harris Teeter only a few blocks from the existing store on 14th Street. I find it unlikely, however, that cleaning the place up (some of these renovations in other cities mean laying down fake hardwood floors and stuff like that) is going to allow these tired old stores to compete with a brand new building. I don't think I could ever describe the Unsafeway as "beloved," even though I've been going to the damn place for close on a decade.
Once again. I would love to see a Harris Teeter on H St. However they have only signed a letter of interest. I can sign a letter of interest about going to the moon...it doesn't mean I am ever going to get there. Look at the site where Harris Teeter is "planned". Have you ever seen any progress? I think Harris Teeter is a maybe at best.
well, the initial comment was about the HT at Penn not the one mooted for 3d & H. There has been occasional activity (looks like soil testing or whatever) on that lot, however, since they knocked down the remnants of the old Amoco.
I hope they renovate the speed of the checkout lanes when they do the Safeway :-) Sometimes I walk in there and just turn around and walk out when I see the lines are into the aisles.
I think the hechinger safeway is pretty good compared to the Kentucky ave Safeway. At least the shelves are stocked. My theory about Safeway checkout lines is that they deduct cashiers until each line has a least 5 customers or more.
Has anyone been by the development at Pennsylvannia & Potomac where the new Harris Teeter is going in? Are they making any progress? Does anyone know when the Harris Teeter is supposed to open? It's such a great development for the community. I'm rooting hard for Harris Teeter to follow through on their letter of intent for the site between 3rd and 4th on H street as well. I think that would be the catalyst for the vacant storefronts on H street to fill up with businesses. It's an exciting time to be living in that part of Northeast.
I avoid that Safeway like the plague. I've never been there when the line was ten people deep and there were nearly enough cashiers. I'd rather go to the Giant near the Home Depot where I at least have the hope of competent customer service.

I have to admit if it's the weekend I cross the bridge to HT. Love the self checkout lanes. Giant is OK during the week but I haven't been in Safeway.
