Here's
a link to a piece on local realtor and H Street property owner John Formant. Despite the article's tone, John Formant is not a very popular guy with many local residents. He apparently has a habit of buying properties and
sitting on them rather than redeveloping them.

I have to wonder why Richard Lyman hasn't invested a dollar in H street. It is pretty easy to have 20/20 hindsight.
I have to wonder why "anonymous" poses such an inane question. It seems to me that Richard Layman has invested copious amounts of uncompensated time and energy in trying to improve H St. (and/or to prevent things from getting worse). That seems to me a far more beneficial contribution than the Formant "investment" strategy of buying properties and letting them sit, unused and decaying, until the market picks up.
I would have to agree with the second comment. Though you may not agree with some (or perhaps any) of Richard's thoughts, or actions, you would be hard pressed to argue that Richard has not put significant time and effort in improving H Street. In addition, do you have to be a business owner to have invested a dollar in H Street? Don't many of us spend money at businesses on H Street? That seems to me like we are helping to support the corridor. Also, I think that time is valuable & when one gives time & heart, one should have a voice. I would hate to think that the strength of one's voice in H Street's future should be solely dictated by the dollars one has invested in a physical property/business on H Street. We all live near H Street & (hopefully) we all try to support it. Shouldn't we all be welcome to contribute to a dialogue about H Street's future?
I agree, I think Richard Layman has really done a lot of great things for H street.
Back to the Formant issue-shouldn't we write a letter to the Hillrag and try to get some attention drawn to the fact that John Formant is essentially a slumlord?
Writing a letter sounds like an excellent idea. Sitting on decrepit properties while others work to improve the area is hardly my idea of someone who supports the H Street community.
I support Richard Lyman.
I also would like to wonder how or what anonymous has done or given into H Street. Instead of pointing fingers, which it seems most "anonymous" comments do, maybe we should focus more on how we can contribute, albeit, time, energy, money... or just to spread a positive word perhaps.
Speaking as one of the many anonymous persons--actually one that does not point fingers. How in the world do you get a user name? I must have tried a dozen different ones and was not able to get a name, hence I remain one of the many villified "anonymouses"
