The Atlas District is a name that has been tossed around a bit as a way to give the area (the 1200-1400 blocks of H Street) sort of a catchy nickname (that you could instantly associate with the Atlas Performing Arts Center, and thus the "arts district" on H Street). The not yet built Ghostbus link probably refers to the still in the making plans for a branded bus (i.e. not a metro bus) that could move H Street visitors from Union Station to The various H Street attractions. My initial reaction is positive. I first lived on the Hill in the mid 1990's, and H St. was then viewed as a crime-ridden barrier. When my wife and I bought on 12th St. in 2003, we continued to see the area south of H St. as the outer limits of the Hill, and were unsure how to refer to the north side. In the past few years it has become clear that H st. is no longer a divider, but is quickly becoming a defining characteristic. Hence it deserves its own moniker, and the Atlas District is much descriptive than the bland 'H St area' or the overly broad 'Near Northeast'.
I should have also mentioned that the Atlas District would refer only to the 1200-1400 block of H Street (the "arts district").
ghostbus?
anything like the Knight Bus in harry potter?
I don't like it. Actually, I like the term "Northside" which no one uses, refering to the northside of the Capitol or Union Station.
I put that out as an idea in 2002, but not being a realtor, I didn't push it...
I like it.
being very found of greco-roman mythology i like using the name Atlas.
though not with the word "district"
"northside" seems a bit arbitrary to me, and doesn't have any substance inherent in the name.
"The Atlas".... now that sounds like a destination!
I'm rather fond of the term Near Northeast for the area although we could also call it the H Street North Area.
Old Towne Trinidad?
H-Dad?
The ever lame SoFlo?
I don't have any major problems with branding the arts portion of H Street the "Atlas District." As for naming the entire area, what's wrong with H Street? Nobody gets confused when you say 14th Street, U Street, or Georgia Ave.
sadly though, without the "NE" designation, the majority of the city defaults to thinking "NW", since thats where the majority of the population/land is.
and ha! "h-dad" is a brilliant name!
I think this will change over time. We can always just say H street Corridor. I don't think people really associate H Street with NW. They either say downtown, or Chinatown when they are talking about parts of H Street in NW. Give it time.
