Roll Call has another short
one today (subscription only), this time on the
Starburst Plaza. The Starburst Plaza is to be built at the intersection of H Street, Benning, Florida, ect. as part of the
Great Streets program. There was an open house recently to show off the latest plans for the Starburst Plaza.

I don't have a subscription to read the article but I did see the Starburst Plaza plans at the DDOT Open House the other night. I have to admit I'm a little dissappointed with the mural design itself.
At the Starburst meetings (many monthes ago), people talked about wanting to tell the history of this neighborhood. In my opinion, a few 10ft high images of famous black americans doesn't really tell the entire story. I want to know what those people did on H Street, a timeline showing the history of H Street, etc.
I'm all for a mural design including visuals & portraits but I'd like to see the design refined with a bit of text.
Besides the mural, I was happy with the design. I was happy the fountains were still part of the design. Overall, the plan seemed to address the #1 concern of the community, which was maintenance.
I look forward to it being built :-D
The meeting on selecting the mural was at the senior citizens building, and the seniors selected the mural over some other more abstract designs. I'm most concerned about the materials. The mural will fade because it is only faux painted mosiac, not real tiles.I think in a few years, it will be a muddy looking wall with borf written all over it.
