The
article is from a few days ago & this news is not news to most hstreet/anc6a listserv subscribers (
Derrick Woody from
Great Streets sent out an email on the topic a while back). $9.6 million (part of $16 million in additional funds assigned to Great Streets by the Council) is being reallocated to other economic development efforts. The Great Streets core budget for streetscape & road work remains intact.

Is the funding for the light rail a part of the great streets initiatives funds? So does this mean no light rail? Maybe we should all write our own Sharon Ambrose or her potential replacements.
I think the trolley tracks are pretty much a done deal (i.e. they are coming).
This is all hogwash. The Mayor's Office never gave the Council a single plan or budget as to how the money would be spent. It would have been irresponsible of the Council to approve the money with no idea how the Executive as to how the Executive planned to spend it. The Council had been asking for detailed spending plans for over a year, yet never got them. At the last minute (when it became clear that the Council was not prepared to move forward with such paultry information) the Mayor's Office submitted a 1-page document with 6 projects for $16 million. There was no detail or budget. So the Council divided the money for specific projects along the Great Street Cooridors.
What about the park at starburst plaza--is that a done deal or will that be cut--I thought this was part of the Great streets iniative.
For H Street, most of what was rolled into Great Streets, except for some unidentified funds, was already programmed. The Starburst intersection is being paid for out of the reconstruction of Benning Road (Ward 7-Ward 8 project), most of the money for the streetscape project was already allocated previously, etc.
