Greening With Treeboxes

Check out this recent article from the Post (thanks to Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space for the link) on treeboxes. Maintaining treeboxes is not only a great way to beautify your street, but it can also be a terrific means to meet your neighbors.

The Rosedale Citizens Alliance has funding for treeboxes in the Rosedale neighborhood (between C and H and 14th and 21st NE). If interested, contact us at rosedalecitizensalliance@gmail.com or see our blog http://www.rosedaledc.blogspot.com/

You may be killing your trees by planting flowers in the tree boxes. Most of the tree roots are in the top 12 inches of soil.Trees need aerated soil, water and mulch. The tree in the picture is quite young anf the flowers are depriving it of nourishment. Check the facts with your Ward 5 DOT tree arborist, or Casey trees

We didn't plant too close to the tree & we added lots of soil & mulch (but kept the mulch safely away from the trunk). I assure you that the tree in the photo is doing fine.

For some of us, there's no tree in our "tree box". So we plant with abandon. Perennials, annuals, mulch all over.

If you want a tree, call 202.727.1000 and make a request. I think that the spring planting cycle is done. It will probably be planted by the fall, if you call by June 15th.
