Are these pictures from the H Street market? I dropped by early last Saturday and found stands that sold gourmet salad greens, bread and plants. Where the heck do I find staples like tomatoes and cucumbers? I had to walk all the way to Eastern Market to buy what I needed!
I believe that the vendors at the H Street market sell fruits, veggies, breads, etc. that they themselves actually grow and produce -- not import from, say, Florida or Guatemala. You'll have to wait until mid-summer for them to offer tomatoes (and they wioll taste a thousand times better than anything you'll find in May at Eastern Mkt).
The farmer's market in Madison, Wisconsin is a famous example of this -- http://www.madfarmmkt.org/fresh.asp
It's a great thing -- eat locally, eat healthier.
The H Street Market is a producers only market (i.e. the farms sell to you directly), Eastern Market is not. The top photo is from the H Street Market, but it is from my archive from last summer. We're just a bit early in the season for tomatoes & cucumbers. If you go to the market information table they can give you (I think) an approximate calendar of when certain fruits & veggies are available.
Has anyone else tried the pork from the guy that sells at this market? After trying it, I'm prety sure that you will not buy an Eastern Market or safeway porkchop or roast. All of the food at this market is bursting with flavor! Just don't touch those raspberries or chocolate brownies.
This weekend, my wife and I pick-up a rack of pork ribs for the BBQ. Quite simply, the were amazing. I agree, the price is a little high, but the taste is well worth it.
