bad idea to walk around with $12,000 in cash.

you could get robbed for 12 GRAND IN CASH in ANY neighborhood.

Well, any neighborhood with check cashing places.

doesn't seem dubious at all, does it?

Jose, you make 7 figures! Get a bank account and a smarter girlfriend!

I was at Cluck-U not too long after the mugging took place. The police presence was substantial; at least four squad cars, along with four or five unmarked cars. They even had a few dogs, although I don't know if they were used to track the perpetrator. It seemed like a large response considering the guy who did it was well away at that point, but perhaps the police are trying to send a message to the community that they care about resolving this kind of street crime. If that's the case, another good way to send that message would be to add more foot patrols to H street.

On a side note, I'd like to observe that the fried chicken at Cluck-U is tasty, particularly the legs. Yum.

What about all the MPD foot patrols assigned to H Street?

Considering the level of suspected drug activity at 12th & H and 12th & I, it's surprising at least one patrol doesn't hang out there all the time. Every time I see cops, they're at H Street Connection, which gets a lot more surveillance than it needs or deserves.

Why this woman might've been cashing such a large sum (and at Western Union rates, no less) is a whole separate and intriguing question.

Who the f*** cashes a check for $12k at a check cashing place???

I think that there is a lot more to this story than meets the eye. Is she a U.S. citizen or permanent resident?

wrong! i assure you any police attention h street connection and 8th/h receive is extremely well deserved. that area is a disaster in the evening.

wait.. huh. who's wrong about what?

especially when your boyfriend is a Nationals player...unless this is something like the Gretzy wife thing.

why in the world would come into this area cashing a check for that amount in the first place.and second of all she should have had someone with her while she was caring that kind of cash.

Well people, it is easy to blame the victim for being stupid. However, stupidity does not justify crime. Even stupid people deserve the right to move about this city without becoming a statistic. Yes, 12k was an ignorant move given the area but I am going to have to say........I doubt this was dumb luck. There is likely a connection between the patrons in/around the store and/or the employees and the perpetrators of the crime. There is also the question of “Gretzky” and who the check was written by. Who directed the individual to that cash checking place to begin with?

I would be more pissed off my community is such a convenient place to commit crime than the fact that someone made a dumb ass move and was robbed.

I agree with you Patrick. It's outrageous that someone can get robbed on H with people around. The police must become more visible on H street, so these knuckle heads don't get away scot free.

Oh p.s.

Who gives a damn what nationality the victim was? I would hope that anyone in my neighborhood would be safe regardless of nationality.

I'm finding more and more, the ability to transpose the word "race" with "nationality" as I read articles. Anyone else find that ironic?

Nationality makes sense in the context of this situation. You can't open a bank account without a SSN. Its very hard to get a SSN if you aren't a citizen or green card holder.

you'd think the Nationals would have direct deposit.

or, you'd think a guy making $4m/year could afford to set up wire transfers on both ends to send money home to the domenican (as was the explanation he offered for this h st. transaction in the washington times). story definitely has some hair on it.

as the great ricky ricardo would have put it: jooooose, jou got some splainin' to do.

it does seem strange. when i had to do a large wire transfer that would also make clear when i would be out of town, i drove to the western union in the safeway in tenleytown. why court trouble? and if wiring money home, why did she have the cash after leaving anyway? weird weird weird.

and to go in every week walking out with 10,000 cash in a 2,000 purse? how many weeks before someone learns the pattern?

3 weeks? commit the crime on the fourth?

Hmmm...what would someone want on THAT particular corner with all that cash? A Nationals-sized large order of buffalo wingers from Cluck-U? Maybe, recognizing the corridor's potential she was putting down a deposit on some property? Or perhaps there was an incredible sale at Autozone? I'm sure it has nothing to do with any OTHER activity that constantly happens on and around that corner...

Anonymous said...

oh yeah, the above comment isn't racist.

Have you seen that particular corner? I don't know what the hell that woman was doing with that much cash, but hell, I can't think of too many big ticket items that can be purchased on H street, can you? Not to mention that there are quite a few drug transactions occurring on H street in the evenings.

Anonymous said...

racist? dude, I'm black. I just was implying that she might be buying drugs there.

The woman was cashing a check at 5:30 in the evening. 3 friends were waiting in the car. People are around. She is little more than a mile from the Capitol. We are a jaded folk to assume that she is a drug buying fool. As Richard says, if women don't feel safe on H street then...
