WP: Armored Car Driver Robbed at Hechinger Mall
I missed this, but someone sent it out on a listserv. The Post has a story on the armed robbery of an armored car driver yesterday at Hechinger Mall.

I saw that- thankfully the driver is recovering. There was some kind of major bust near my house (L and 6th NE) Weds. night involving several marked and unmarked police cars. I tried calling to inquire about it and was told by MPD that they can't tell me anything. I don't want their names, but was under the impression you could find out out the general gist of what might have occurred. Am I misunderstanding the citizen's right to a little info??
Hey, anon: Your mistake isn't mis-understanding your rights. Your mistake is thinking that anyone in the DC gov't cares about your rights. Trust me, you are not a citizen of DC, you are a subject of the Government of the District of Columbia.
Hey, first anon, ask Gwen (who sits outside all day and night) on the steps of her house (about 620 Lish) about what went down. She knows about everything in the neighorhood.
The cops should be embarassed that this happened at such a busy Safeway. The robber clearly knew that they would get away...no chance of running into a cop in this part town is there?
Well, maybe waiting in line at Horance & Dickie's.
To be fair, I would haveto say that I've seen a lot more cops in the area in recent months. Yesterday I looked out my window around 7am & saw two officers on bikes riding through my alley. I also believe there is a police substation at Hechinger, but this is pretty crazy that those guys could pull this off right there in broad daylight.
I live at the corner of Staples and Neal and am concerned about this, especially since I woke up to find 7 bullet holes in my car about 2 weeks ago.
When I lived at 10th and D NE I saw police all the time...ALL the time. Now, not nearly as much. Although the police presence may be better, it seems to me a bit lacking given the crime. Aren't high crime areas where a greater number of police should be?
anon-- wait, i live at Neal and Staples and I didn't hear any gun fire. Tho, some nights I don't make it home. Did the police do anything? That's scary.
They came, picked up the shell casings on the street (roughly 20 of them), took pictures of my car and that's it. No one was hurt (although there were some young men sitting on the stoop of the unoccupied 'apartment' right there, but they obviously ran away and didn't come back to talk to the police...I think they were the targets), so I don't think they really cared. They even left all of the bullets in my car...didn't take it for evidence or anything like that.
If you would like to talk with the police to get some information about what happened, come to your PSA meeting. You'll also get a chance to remind the Lt. for your area that you need more police presence, and explain to her why you need it. There _are_ channels to open a dialogue with the MPD, but comments on Frozen Tropics isn't one of them (even though it is a great blog!).
The next PSA 102 meeting (where I think you're located) will be June 13 at Sherwood Rec Center. Come and be heard!
I live at 10th and H and one night called 911, I thought someone was breaking in, and the police were literally there within a minute--in fact there were 3 squad cars withing a minute. I see quite a few police around here. So I guess it just depends on the night and who is on.
You're right- we do pay dearly for city services, and we do deserve responsive city services. But what I am saying is that the only way to let them know they need to improve is to tell them, or our elected officials, directly. They can't read minds, and they don't often read blogs. I suggest you give them a piece of your mind, on the phone, in an email, or at a meeting. This is how we can hold them accountable, and show them what needs to change.

Check out the number of cops around the Verizon Center before, and after an event. Those cops should be in our neighborhood.

It happened about 11:30 pm Mon. May 8.
I think I was home then, but I'm a really sound sleeper. Didn't know I was that sound, though.
Maybe that's why in three years I've never heard any gun shots.

Really! DC taxpayers pay dearly for service and should not have to attend meetings to get it! It is time that the police are held accountable.
