ANC 6A ABL Committee Meeting Tonight

P1010108_1
What: The Alcoholic Beverage Licensing Committee (they write the VAs & handle othe issues). On tonight's agenda is a proposal to open a new liquor store in the 900 block of H Street.
When: 7pm
Where: Sherwood Rec Center (10th & G). 2nd floor.

In re-reading the original ABL email I realized that I know this liquor store (relocating from the corner of 15th & H Street NW) because it is right around the corner from my office. They stock a variety of liquors, wines & beers (plenty of cheap stuff, but a selection of nicer wines & beers too). The downtown location does not have bullet-proof glass. It isn't a chi-chi wine shop, but it isn't Family Liquor either. It's an average liquor store seeking to move into a fairly saturated market.

The LAST thing H Street needs is another liquor store.

Please voice your opinion at tonight's meeting or email ANC member Mary Beatty (listed as the contact for ABL Committee) at mbeatty6a05@comcast.net

I could have sworn today was June 20 and not April 1. Is my calendar wrong??

Note to would-be H Street Entrepreneurs:

For the most part, us H Street folk are not a terribly unreasonable lot. Like many people in our fair city, we would like access to quality services and retail at reasonable prices. Something our beloved corridor is sorely lacking. We don’t require that each new restaurant use white linen table cloths and fancy silverware. We don’t require retail catering only to those in the uppermost income brackets. And we certainly don’t require coffee conjured up by marketing geniuses in Seattle. We just want quality retail and service offerings that enhance the quality of life for all people living along the corridor, plain and simple. Probably the same thing you would want in your neighborhood. Not too unreasonable, right?

Ok, now that we’ve got that out there. Here are two things in particular we do not need. First off, I think the message got through loud and clear when this issue came up about a month ago, but just to be sure I’ll say it again. No strip clubs, thank you. Enough said. Second, for the love of God almighty in Heaven, NO MORE CLASS A LIQUOR STORES. Please let that sink in. Take a few seconds to read the text in all caps again if need be. Have you not visited the H Street Corridor? Have you not seen all the liquor store competition? Have you not seen the poor souls wandering around too drunk to realize where they are? Public drunkenness, public drinking, Forty ounce bottles dropped in neighbors’ yards, public urination, public defecation… The problems go on and on. Is that clear enough for you? So if you plan on opening another liquor store on H, before you draw up that business plan and start investigating available properties, stop and think to yourself. Reach for that moment of clarity. Then ask, is this really a good idea??

I must say I'm sorry I missed this meeting. Though I, too, am in agreement with the posters who talk about the saturation of liquor stores in the neighborhood, I for one would be overjoyed at the prospect of being able to buy good wine or beer without having to go all the way to Martin's Market. If indeed the original store doesn't have glassed-in cashiers and a good selection of wines and beers, why not give them a chance? Couldn't we stick some provision onto their acceptance, like no singles, etc.? Just a thought.

Given the posted description, which I hadn't seen, I rescind my earlier comment. I agree. We don't need any more check cashing or snack foods. Argh.
