WP: 20 5th District Squad Cars Grounded

Check out this recent Post story on the temporary grounding (due to missing gas tracking keys) of 20 squad cars in the 5th District. Obviously the grounding of this squad cars (out of how many?) is more than a little troubling. When I read the article I couldn't help but think about the recent introduction of bike patrols in Trinidad. I like the bike patrols & I feel that I have generally seen more officers in Trinidad & around H Street in recent months. Do other people feel the same way? I know that some people have recently said that there seems to be an uptick in crime. We never have burglaries on Florida, but we had a fluke last month where we managed to have 3 events in one day (practically unheard of). The crimes were likely perpetrated by the same 3 individuals. They broke into a garage (& the car inside), stole a pick-up truck from behind a fire station, & cut the bars off another house trying to gain access. I also heard about a drive-by shooting near Oates & Bladensburg. Is this just the typical warm weather/summer crime escalation (or is there even an escalation)?

I ran along G and Gates St NE last night from Stanton Park to 25th St NE at about 8 PM and saw several squad cars along the way. They seemed to be responding proactively to the large number of people out on the street, on front stoops, etc. in the hot weather.

there will probably always be a small uptick in hot weather, even if it's just a few extra hot tempered assaults...

Those police cars are most likely 1st District officers. Since H street was moved to the 1st district, police visibility has increased. It increased even more under Commander Groomes. She even knows the area.

I know Frozen Tropics has defended the 5th district police, but when we were under them, the response wasn't that great in the executive level. It seemed like a lot a dead wood was given to Commander Greene...but then she also seemed like she was only going through the motions.

I am not by any means saying that everything the 5th District is doing is correct. In fact, I have meny problems with the way things are done here & I fail to understand how yanking 20 police cars could possibly be a good thing. But, I really have noticed greater police visibility in both the 1st & 5th Districts (but I would agree that the 1st District does seem to be really targeting H Street.
