Brunch @ the Argonaut

P1010112
just a reminder that the Argonaut is now serving brunch on Saturdays & Sundays from 11am-4pm. I don't have a copy of the menu, but I'm told that they serve up all the brunch standards & then some.

Actually, they have a really tasty brunch with excellent omelets with fresh veggies,(hopefully they will not run out of spinach this week) real cheesy grits and tasty homefries. You will not find a better brunch on Capitol Hill.

I stopped by for brunch not to long ago but had to leave after seeing it cost between $8 or $9 for two eggs and toast.

I am all for supporting the local businesses and am happy to pay a bit more for food and drink to support the new places but their prices were so out of wack it was ridicolous. I went up to Penn Ave in SE and was able to get a whole meal for less.

I also understand that the Arganout is running a deficit at the moment and hope that turns around quickly but it seems a better way to do that would be to draw people in rather than push them out.

Wouldn't 20 people eating a moderately priced breakfeast be better than $5 eating an overpriced one?

I have to agree with the second poster. The pricing structure for the brunch is all out of wack.

Agree with #2 & #3.

Well, I've already mentioned in the FT comments that I think the H Street options are a little overpriced, but that said, I think the brunch is probably more reasonable than the drinks are. The prices start high, but even the more expensive items don't get much higher, so it's pretty comperable to the Barracks Row prices. Now, whether 14th and H merits charging the same prices as Barracks Row is questionable, but since I can walk five minutes or twenty minutes, I'll suck it up and enjoy the brunch.

And a very tasty brunch it is. The potatoes are delicious, and my omelette was one of the best I've had at any restaurant in the area. The service was pretty ludicrously bad, but we were the only people in the place, so I didn't really mind walking up to the bar and just asking for whatever I needed. Though some attention would have been nice. I imagine if breakfast takes off, it will be feasible to hire waitstaff and bartenders, rather than having the bartender serve both roles.

In any case, given how happy I am to have brunch in the area, I'm quite pleased.

Also, check out the Ohio breakfast across the street. Yes, the cook might smoke while he cooks your eggs. Yes, you might be eating off of styrofoam. No, it doesn't matter because the food is cheap, delicious, and the staff is very pleasant.

I went the first weekend they served brunch, and I was happy with what I ordered, the grits were great and the bloody mary was even better, mmm, horseradish.

Now if they can get the permit for outdoor seating, things'll be great. Can't wait to try the brunch and also the Ohio.

I think they stopped doing brunch on Saturday- not enough customers. It's Sunday only now.

Yep. No Saturday brunch and they end brunch on Sundays at 3 not 4. I found out the hard way last weekend. Showed up on Saturday, but no go. Then went on Sunday at about 3:20, no go again. I guess it just wasn't meant to be...

Check out their garlic mayonaise sometime with a burger--it is to die for! We asked, and they make it fresh on-site--press a lot of garlic cloves & mix it into mayonaise, add a little mustard seed. Can't wait to try brunch.

Best,

Alan
