Post: Protests Return to Gallaudet

A meeting of the trustees has renewed (as promised last spring) the protests over the woman chosen to take the role of university president this January. Last spring's protests included students camping on the front grounds for weeks before finally disbanding. Press coverage was heavy as Gallaudet is frequently viewed not only as the premier university for the deaf, but also as a cultural mecca for deaf culture worldwide. Protestors complained that Fernandes was too unfriendly, and not qualified. They also said the search should have included a greater emphasis on diversity. Fernandes' supporters claimed she was the best qualified candidate & dismissed the protestors as angry over deaf politics (Fernandes, who was born with some hearing & later became profoundly deaf, grew up speaking, & did not learn sign language until she was an adult).
