It's true, Alphonso Morgan, proprietor of R&B Coffee (1359 H Street) has passed on the reins. But never fear, R&B Coffee isn't going anywhere. The new owner plans to keep the coffee shot & also to continue Alphonso's efforts to obtain a liquor license for the 2nd floor (making evening hours more viable).

Will Alphonso still help run the place? He was a good businessman who care about his customers.
No, Alphonso has gone to work for an IT company in the suburbs. R&B will be under new management.

Give me a little time. I've got to talk to the new owner. I understand that he is making a few changes inside.
Just saw a post on a neighborhood listserve that the defunct Readers Lounge is going to be replaced by Busboys and Poets. Any truth to this?
I saw this too, but I'm going to place it squarely in the realm of myth/wishful thinking. Even if I bought the location, the space is way too small & there is not (to my knowlege) an existing kitchen in that space capable of accomodating a real restaurant.
The owner of that building (on the 400 block of Hst) told me that one of the biz partners that was part of the "Reader's Lounge" group will be taking over the lease. It will be a book store with some live spoken word performances.
R&B should reopen at the end of November with great coffee (including french press) and good pastries.

That's great about the pastries and coffee, but I hope they don't change the interior too much...that was a good looking place. And it's got a back yard that would make a great place to hang out w/ some deckage.
When they do re-open, I really hope they have better hours. I understand it's not cheap to run multiple shifts, but there were so many times I wanted to go there early morning or late aft/evening, and it was always closed. Those are MUST HAVE hours for the coffee shop crowd, and no coffeeshop can survive otherwise.
Back yard is nice. I hosted a concert there in June for Can A Sista Rock A Mic? and the place was awesome looking. Alphonso builted a stage and all for the show. Going to miss him,but the coffee will still be there.
