DC Pedestrian Master Plan

I received the following by email (from a Commissioner in 6A), and it thought it would be of interest:

The DC Department of Transportation has begun a year long study of the walking conditions in the District. I would appreciate it if you could post this brief announcement to your local neighborhood listserves. We would like to get as much input as possible into this planning process citywide.

If you care about walking in the District, brick sidewalks vs. concrete, motorists running stop signs, speeding traffic, dangerous intersections, than please take a look at this web link:

There is a link on this page to participate in a 10 minute survey where you can provide input into the issues I mentioned above. I work for this company, and I can assure you, that on every one of the projects we work on, we read every comment. Your comments can lead to
improvement projects and policy changes that will have a direct impact on the quality of life we experience as pedestrians in the district.

This survey really is quick and easy and gives a couple of places to say where we want to see pedestrian improvements. Whether they actually use it or not, I saw it as an opprotunity to stress a safer & cleaner H Street, NE corridor. I hope others will do the same. It can't hurt.

Since H already has great improvements in its very near future- maybe we can also address some of the walkability issues on the way to the NY ave Metro station and along Florida Ave east of NY Ave. Sidewalk widening would be a great improvement and would help people to feel safer walking along such a busy street. Crossing over to the Florida Market area could be easier and more inviting too.

Speaking of- if Eastern Market flea market portion gets the boot from that site, let's lobby them to move up to the Florida Market area. Maybe some of the landowners of that space could put a little bit of money into sprucing it up in order to get people up there and more interested in the area and preserving parts of the market in the face of the New Town proposal.

to clarify- I have heard some rumors- some of them from Eastern Market vendors- that that parking lot might get sold and used for residential development.

nytimes.com had a well-written piece up yesterday about making new york more walkable/bike friendly.
