A message from the Atlas:
This week we have two original shows running at the Atlas.
Wednesday February 14th-Sunday February 18th is the world premiere of the Gospel Musical He's Not Your Soul Mate. Written and directed by Michelle Lee Robinson
An original gospel play produced by UMOJA works productions, He's Not Your Soul Mate is a Christian comedy of errors - - everything is fodder for the protagonist, Gloria, who has comment and observation on her daughters' lifestyles, their choice of spouses, her neighbor's sexual prowess, her brother and sister-in-law's marriage, and even God Himself. This engaging play will make the audience howl with laughter.
Tickets are $35
And in the Lab Theatre II the African Continuum Theatre Company presents: J's Jook Joint on Friday and Saturday nights only!
J's Jook Joint is a special, limited engagement cabaret that is a modern-day twist on the historical "jook joint" experience. Featuring the best and brightest of Washington D.C.'s African-American performers such as Nova Nelson, Yvette Manson, Andy Torres, Carl Wilson and Ralph Herndon. J's Jook Joint highlights the continuum of African-American music- from jazz standards to gospel-inspired pop to soul-infused show tunes.
Tickets are $15-20
Tickets can be purchased at the Atlas box office (399-7993) or online at www.atlasarts.org
The Atlas Performing Arts Center is located at 1333 H Street NE, the heart of the Atlas District!
And on Friday and Saturday nights the Atlas District Courtesy Shuttle is available to bring patrons to and from Union Station. To request a pick up call 1-301-751-1802

i'm curious, are all the productions at the atlas theatre 'african american' themed?
i think i remember that they had one that wasn't, but i can't remember if it was more of a hispanic, or asian themed production.
does a company have to be predominantly african american to try to get something on stage?
i'd like to know, because i may have to fire some folks, and hire some other folks just to get on stage.
or can someone suggest a small theatre that doesn't have racial tendencies?
Most productions at the Atlas are not "african american themed".
The resident drama company is African American, but even most of their plays have at least one caucasian... and these are not just 'whitey' roles. A recent play had a white man in one of two leading roles. The play was even directed by Jeremy Skidmore. Every play that I've seen there has a universal theme... maybe you have not bothered to even see Raisin in the Sun to know. It really is your loss.
The facts are, if you pay the rent, you can get "something on stage". But then maybe you should attend some events at the Atlas before making such ignorant comments.
I think that the Atlas should be congratulated for attempting to reach out to the entire community. It makes good business sense too.
uh huh.
brilliant.
Ahhh…nothing like waking up to such incredible ignorance and ineptitude early in the morning.
Anon 5:21, you truly are an idiot!
If you bothered to look at what the Atlas is doing this year (which you obviously failed to do…maybe failure is why you’re not on stage), you’d see that besides African Continuum theatre company (black) there’s: Capital City Symphony (white), Washington Savoyards (white), Tehreema Mitha (Indian), Levine School of Music (everything), Joy of Motion (everything), Congressional Chorus (white), Washington Musica Viva (predomiantetly white), – both of which, according to posts on Inked’s site were last weekend, StepAfrika (black), Washington Performing Arts Society (everything). I got that info from their brochure. Easy to look up there, Anon 5:21. Has anyone even seen a Hispanic or Asian play there yet?
Anon 5:21, it seems like you know NOTHING of what’s happening on H Street, and your comments only fuel the ridiculous prejudice that existed for so long. I hope never to see you on stage at the Atlas or otherwise.
Again, your ignorance is overwhelming.
I say BRAVO! to the Atlas! And, unlike our friend here, Anon 5:21, I’m sure that much of the community echoes my sentiments.
huh?
What is afican american themed about Kiss Me Kate or the Condensed Mikado? Are you in Kansas or something?
