Ok, I've heard it from a few sources, and now the
Going Out Gurus are reporting it. So I'm going to call it official: the Pug (1234 H Street) will open tomorrow. I stopped by the other night and gazed through the door at the lit-up (but locked) bar. It looks great. I'm not much for sports bars, but I look forward to checking this (boxing themed) bar out.

This is GREAT news!
Viva Pug! Viva Pug! Viva yet another pub!
Dear Pug,
I've heard that you're going to have somewhat of a sports bar theme. Perhaps you can show some Premiership English Footie on the weekends. Go on you Arsenal.
Your neighbour across the street,
Maz
I dunno about yet another place to watch Arsenal, but speaking as a D.C. United fan, it's unfortunate the Red and the Black didn't get named "the Black and Red" instead.
Anyone know if there are any 'opening night' festivities planned, or if this is just going to go off as a regularly scheduled bar night? Either way, I've been looking forward to this for some time - another bar on H Street that won't have a cover four nights a week.
Just over priced puke juice
kind of a crappy day for an opening.
the upside is that it won't be toooooo crowded.
It will be packed.
It is NOT a sports bar
Ok, so it's not a "sports bar" in the conventional sense (it doesn't look like one). The place has a boxing theme, and if if isn't remotely a "sports bar," someone should tell the Going Out Gurus that because they refer to it as a "boxing-themed sports bar."
I think you'll see quite a crowd tonight (a lot of people have been waiting a long time for this one to open). Besides, it's only a few flurries.
Does anyone know if this place will have draft beer? That is one thing that annoys me about many of the new bars on H St.
There has been a problem in DC with theft of empty kegs. Storing them and securing them is a big problem even in foggy bottom and georgetown, Id guess it could be even a bigger problem on H. It was only little over a year ago that a huge flat screen TV walked out the window...scrap metal prices alone make them valuable.
maybe they could call it the
spar bar.
Fed Govt just closed for weather. Think the Pug's open now???
It would be a wise business decision for them to open now.
With this spike of attention now would be a good time to have the web sites back up. The Atlas District site is still down and I don't remember the URL for the PUG... anyone know it?
The federal government closed for weather?? It isn't bad out at all right now. The Pug site is still down.
The Atlas District website has changed - it's now www.atlas-district.com. There are links to the sites for the bars that are open (including H Street Martini), but the link for the Pug doesn't work at the moment.
I just stopped by on my way to AutoZone, and Tony told me they will be opening at 6 PM tonight. Should be a packed house tonight!
Anyone make it to the Pug tonight? How was it? What was the crowd like? We need details!
I didn't make it in last night, but went past. Didn't look too busy, but yesterday was a tough night for opening night. How was it?
Didn't any of you people go?! Are you all just a bunch of talk?! I mean it was opening night, man!
told ya so!
crappy day for an opening.
not too crowded.
and yes, this group is a bunch of talk.
the pug will be popular, once it gets into the city paper ads for the atlas district, reviewed, etc.
the folks on this group aren't gonna make, or break, the pug.
It's funny. I didn't make it out last night because I'm sick. But I've heard from several people that the Pug was packed last night. Maybe it didn't pick up until later (that was certainly the case for the Rock and Roll Hotel the night of their soft opening).
I went to the Pug around 9 and it was totally packed until around 10:30 when I left.
Busy until at least midnight. Good mixed crowd of young, black, white, old, hipster and not so hipster.
Rock on, Tony
I went down to the pug last night around 10pm and it was still crowded at that point. Started clearing out a slight bit by 11 or so but that's to expect on a monday night (regardless of weather).
Oh and did i mention they have schaeffer beer for 2 bucks! I mean, its terrible beer but great for the budget conscious grad student.
Overall, I liked the decor. It's definitely not a "sports bar" but more of a boxing themed bar. There were three tv's all about 20 inches, two showing old school boxing and one not even on. Inserted in holes in the walls were odd cartoons and books, all of a religious (read: Jesus Saves) nature. Did anyone notice these?

Did they have beer on tap? That's the one thing I don't like about going to the Palace or the Red & the Black: no draft beer.
The Pug has no draft beer.
scott,
tony once toyed with being a priest (his father grew up in a very Catholic enviornment) or a cop. What else do you expect from an Irish kid?
the shelves are also lined with lots of pop culture and history books as well. This isn't an Ebeneezer's
just drink up, and you'll be able to see the irony of religious crap in a bar.
just goes to show how funny the whole thing is.
better yet would be books on abortion and absitenance hanging in a brothel in nevada.
just drink up and let tony be proud of his place and help him pay the bills.
it's another place that's helping to better DC's northernmost slum.
Wow, where does all this sort of bile come from?
A guy does a nice job putting a lot of himself into a place and this is the sort of meanness thrown out there. What a pity
I swung by a little after 9 opening night, and it was standing room only. The bartenders were a bit overwhelmed. They had a decent selection of bottled beers ranging from American standards, to one or two Micros, and a few imports. I saw a few people drinking cans of something, but didn't suss it out. The bar looks to be well stocked with rail drinks and blue collar standards, but rather thin in variety - I assume this will change with time, or maybe they're just going the 'keep it simple' route? The front half of the bar was very warm and inviting decor-wise, but faded towards generic towards the back. The curious were out in force, with a very mixed crowd. I think some people were really into the theme - I've certainly never seen so many Ivy Caps in one place in the District before! They definitely pulled business away from The Red and The Black and POW as both were pretty deserted on the same night. In any event it is a welcome addition to the neighborhood, and I wish them all the success in the world.
Is the Pug serving food? If so, what's it like?
I didn't mean to insult anyone by commenting about the religious materials in the bar, I was just a little curious by it and wondered if anyone knew anything about it (which they did: Tony once wanted to be a priest, didn't know that. Now I do.)
I can (and will) certainly support my local bar and think Tony did a great job, and didn't mean to imply anything else. This is just the first bar i've been to where i've seen chick cartoons.
the only food i saw was some sort of large bread type thing (cake? loaf? dunno) behind the bar. I dunno if its something you could order or if it was just some food people were eating. I didnt see anyone else eating anything.
that said i also didn't ask about food so they could have a huge menu?
that was helpful eh?
They are supposed to offer American food. But maybe it isn't up and running yet.
Does anyone know what time they'll be opening during the week? The H St bars need to start opening earlier to accomodate the after work crowd.
Not sure about the Pug, but I know that the Red & the Black's website says they are now opening at 6pm.
What happened to happy hour starting at 4pm? What is this world coming to?!
