Roll Call: Reducing Litter on H Street

Here is a Roll Call (subscription required) piece on efforts to reduce litter on H Street. Anwar Saleem and Alan Kimber were interviewed. By the way, links from DCist, the Express, and general interest in the criminal events of the past 48 hours resulted in over 1000 individual users visiting this site yesterday.

You should hook up with google ads so you can get some revenue for your hard work.

I drove to work on H St. this morning and found that the two center lanes were blocked off from 2nd to at least 12th. There were quite a few construction crews out digging up part of the street. Does anyone know what this is all about? Is it the beginning of the light rail installation?

I clicked through to Roll Call and you have to sign up for $275 to get the article! Wow, are they kidding?

Seriously Inked, google ads. this site is such a resource. Plus, you have links to all the major businesses on H street - free advertising for them! Sell them some ad space!

This city had a $300 million dollar surplus last year because it does not do it's job a clean the friggin streets. Forget giving Abe $50 mil for the phone booth. Clean up H street every day.

I was wondering the same thing about the streets yesterday. The streets will have to be reinforced to support the weight of the light rail I imagine. I can't wait to see tangible changes on H and at the starburst intersection.
As for litter we need a "Don't Trash Trinidad" campaign, too.

Rob,
I'm not artificially limiting my idea to H Street alone--I made sure it was generic, so that it could even be used citywide.

I'm working on getting some funding so that I can make more of the signs & working with Keep DC Beautiful to help develop a comprehensive anti-litter program--including education, wider community involement, enforcement, and the District fulfilling its obligations.

I need to work out the details with them, but both Giant and Safeway have committed to have larger versions of the anti-litter signs printed and place them in all of their stores in DC. This is one connection I've made already through Keep DC Beautiful.

The current road work on H Street is part of the infrastructure upgrades before the rail tracks and stantions can be put in place. Pepco is in the process of making sure they can support the new rail system.

Thanks a lot for your work Alan. I was just plugging my little slogan. The big difference is that you're actually doing the work needed to get real signs hung up so I completely support your idea.

Rob,

I by no means meant to shoot down your idea. Discussing it with my wife later that night, she suggested working with groups/individuals in Trinidad and other areas in the District to add local slogans to the basic graphic I've created.

The idea would be to add things like "Don't Trash Trinidad", while keeping the existing graphic on the lower portion of a sign to provide a common portion/theme across the District. She also suggested making yard signs available to citizens, provided they are not too expensive (and at least in my case, provided the residents willing to display the signs are able to reimburse the cost--can't fund the entire effort myself!).

And thank you for the kudos. Just trying to do what I can to help the neighborhood.

Best,
