Councilmember Tommy Wells Opens Southwest Office Hours

(Washington, DC) – On Thursday, February 8th, 8:00 – 9:00 am, Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells will kick off the first of his Southwest morning office hours at the Channel Inn, 650 Water Street, SW, 20024. “Community meetings and events put me in many neighborhoods several nights a week, but I wanted to create a new way to make sure I am accessible throughout Ward 6 to hear from and help the residents I serve,” said Mr. Wells.

On the second Thursday of every month, Councilmember Wells and members of his staff will arrive at the Channel Inn at 8:00 am to make the Council office more accessible to residents living in Southwest DC. Representatives from his constituent services staff will also be on hand to help handle requests from residents. “Whether it’s help with a permit from DCRA, an alley that needs to be cleaned, or an idea that could turn into legislation at Council, I want to make myself more available to those that may not be able to make it to the Wilson Building downtown,” added Mr. Wells.

Councilmember Wells is currently looking to establish similar morning office hours on a monthly basis along H Street, NE.

Frank Hankins, the new owner is sewing up a new lease as we speak. The coffee shop/wine bistro will be called "Sova"

Also, it is great to see that ward 6 has been lucky enough to first have Sharon then Tommy serving us. Probably two of the better council people ever in DC

Sounds good. Bring the Sova!
So now we need to find out where Council Member Thomas's office hours will be. His Web site promises "Mobile Constituent Services - Accessible and prompt services". What's his position on the Fla. Market? Need to get Kojo & Jonetta to ask him that one :-)

maybe the atlas would be a good place for him to establish some hours.

Tommy's Chief of Staff indicated that they are working to set up coffeehours/meetings for NE soon. Current plan is to probably at various places along H Street NE, in order to highlight the progress being made in the revitalization efforts.

In response to his request for suggestions, I mentioned Sidamo's, Ebenezer's, Rib Tip, Cluck-U Chicken and Dynamic Wellness.

Also, the only reason I didn't suggest any of the Joe Englert ventures is that I'm pretty sure they are looking for morning coffee-type meetings.

Oh yeah,
I thank Sharon, every time I pay my inflated electric bill. She was responsible for deregulating electricity in DC. She is hardly one of the best...

Isn't the Ebenezer coffeehouse, a religous owned place? Therefore not contributing to the DC tax base. It certainly has no connection to H street in any case.

I realize that Ebenezer's is owned by a religious group (church that meets at Union Station) and doesn't really have a connection to H Street.

However, it is new, and if Tommy is trying to get to places that are participating in the revival of the greater H Street NE area, it doesn't seem like it would be a bad idea to hold one of the coffee hours there.

Of course, all locations and dates are up to Tommy--I'm just trying to facilitate.

Best,
Alan

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the congregation that owns Ebenezer’s anti-gay? I've been told that they preach a very homophobic message.

If true, then the First Amendment certainly protects their right to preach and believe as they wish. But that doesn't mean that our local politicians should frequent such businesses.

How about Sova? Frank used to live around the corner from me and seems to be the kind of business owner that we all want in our neighborhood.

Thank you all for your patience and continued interest in the business formerly known as R&B Coffee. Joe was correct to say that I'm finally sewing up some leasing issues that have been hanging over from the prior business. I'm also waiting for certain licences and permits to get transfered under my business. So I expect that it will still be another 6 weeks or so by the time I can open the doors.

What I can say is, once I'm open, I expect you will have another place on H St to be proud of (with longer and more consistent hours. 7 days a week).

If you have specific questions, feel free to go to my new splash page at www.sovadc.com and click on the contact box to send me an e-mail. I'll do my best to answer all your questions.

I am so looking forward to serving you great coffee, premium loose leaf teas, and eventually, wine and some select bottled beers, in a warm and comfortable space.

That's great news about Sova, and I certainly don't want to endorse an anti-gay (or anti-any group) message. If that is the case about Ebenezer's, I agree it would be a poor choice.

I have been able to arrange with Tommy Wells' office to have a coffee hour on H Street NE. Here are the details:

February 22, 2007
Sidamo's Coffeehouse
417 H Street NE
8am--??? (I would guess 1-1.5 hours)
