Um, this weekend I had two meals out. One at Franklin's in Hyattsville, the other at Cafe Deluxe across from the Nat. Cathedral.
Both were excellent meals. Great service. The food was very good. The price points reasonable.
Col. Brooks Tavern and Ellis Island in Brookland charge more for meals than either of these places. And the service and food doesn't come close to comparison.
I am so tired of businesses claiming they are great and being barely mediocre.
You know, I want to support the local businesses but for the most part, they're crap. RibTip is a great example of a place with great food but whose service leaves a bit to be desired. I can understand that they have some glitches the first week but they've been open for two months. One of the few places I've been where I didn't feel like I was getting bad service was Sidamo. They knew what they were doing, were friendly, and didn't have any attitude.
As far as the Rib Tip goes he says he's looking to hire help to improve service. I've never encountered anything but courteous, friendly service there. He has plans for improvements and he owns the building so rent is not an issue. I encourage everyone reading this to go check it out in person...if it's not your style, that's great. But it's definitely not 'crap'.
I agree with Rob. When I stopped by Rib Tip on a recent weekday (before everything was in place for full service), the couple who greeted me were more than friendly. I am a barbecue enthusiast, and when I asked about their cooking style and flavors, they were actually kind enough to give me a tour of the kitchen and to let me taste both their hot and mild sauces.
Rib Tip seems to have the potential to be a great neighborhood restaurant, and I have given them the past two weeks to get up to speed with all the new equipment before making a real visit. Now I'm looking forward to checking it out!
It's great to hear they own the building, too. That gives them the potential to become a real neighborhood fixture going forward.
