If you haven't checked out the Argonaut's patio yet, the time is ripe to do so. With the warmer weather settling in and sunny skies reigning, the patio is the perfect place right off H Street to get some air while hanging out with friends. The patio is open until 11pm Sunday through Thursday and Fridays and Saturdays you can enjoy it until 12am. The Argonaut is located at 1433 H Street.

Is that billboard above and on the left side of the patio legal? I'm guessing that it belongs to the adjacent property. It is UGLEEEEEEEE!
I was walking along H Street yesterday, and I saw the hearing notice on the shop that is being renovated at 5th and H (two doors down from Sidamo).
A quick review of the application says that they are seeking a Class C Tavern license, and that they are planning to serve "deli-style" food as well as light fare.
Of potential concern is the fact that their application indicates that they will have "live and recorded" music until 2 AM weeknights and until 3 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. But they are also indicating that they will have poetry recitations and may occasionally charge a cover. They are also planning outdoor seating (most likely in the area to the side of the building facing 5th Street).
The early buzz on this establishment was that the propietor was seeking a "Busboys & Poets" kind of vibe. Though I don't know anything about their license application, it does seem like the description of this one would lend itself to the cafe portion of B&P. I'm interested to see where it goes from here.
The "billboard" is the sign for the business (the Argonaut). Why it actually says "Drgonaut" is a question I can't answer (but it isn't a billboard).
421 is going to be a jazz bar called Pap and Petey's.
It says Argonaut. The 'A' is sybolized by a triangle, seemingly to refer to a billiards racking triangle.
When Argonaut first opened, I asked about the triangle. I was told by the original manager (no longer there) that it was a Greek letter "delta" and she thought it had two or three meanings:
1. A Greek letter to relate to the Greek origin of the Argonaut concept.
2. 'Delta' is the symbol used in science to indicate change - much as Argonaut indicated a change in the neighborhood.
3. It was an intentional shout-out to that old yellow and green triangular sign on the building from back when it was still Ledbetter's. I can't recall if the sign is still up, but it said something about a triangle and you could see it clearly in most of the early pictures Inked posted here.
Made it out to the patio for the first time last night and it was most excellent. Same great food and service in a new atmosphere.

Like Linden Dweller, I was on the patio last night for the first time. I took my laptop, had a beer and did some work (Argo has free wireless!). Fantastic!
Free wireless?? Beer and wireless just sounds so much better than coffee and wireless somehow...
Ok, those are some good answers on the Delta thing. The old sign did picture a triangle and the words "Triangle Lounge." Mystery no more.
I will continue to insist, however, on pronouncing the establishment's name "Drig-oh-nid-uht". (There are two deltas in there.)
To anyone who's never learned the Greek alphabet, there's no problem--the capital delta looks like an artistic A. For those of us who have--well, I'm sure we can suck it up.
I hadn't even noticed the 2nd delta.
To go back to 421 H- I'm a little leery of something that has live and recorded music til 2 and 3 in the morning. A poetry-reading type place would be fine, but something more like a nightclub is a little bit much for the "residential" side of H Street. And as someone who lives on that block of 5th Street, I can't say I'd relish having a bunch of people hanging out, drinking, creating noise and trash on a residential block.
Sorry that I wasn't clear about the billboard. It isn't in the photo at all. It higher ... sort opposite the satelite dish.
I actually like the Argonaut sign.
