WT: Noise Bill Introduced
The Times reports on the newly introduced bill set to modify the existing noise law. This new bill is partly a response to concerns from neighbors at 8th & H Streets who regularly endure hours of amplified street preaching.

Kudos to Tommy Wells for this one. This bill is LONG overdue. What I can't understand is why it's take an entire city government this long to figure out a solution. Yes, free speech is good. But this goes far beyond that. No one has a right to harass residents endlessly.
Do I understand this bill correctly, that it will be in place in the next couple of months? Kudos not only to Tommy Wells but the entire group that kept pushing for this-- Quest for Quiet, etc.
The bill was referred to the Committee on Public Services and Consumer Affairs, chaired by Councilmember Mary Cheh (a co-introducer of the bill). She will hold a public hearing on the proposal in the coming months, and then it must be approved by the committee. After that, the full Council will debate it and have to vote on the proposal. If it passes, the Mayor must sign it before it can go into effect. There are several more steps to go, but Councilmember Wells has started the process.
