Inked - thanks for posting this!

I reached out to Diane yesterday after hearing that the event was coming up next Monday. It sounds like there are some more restaurants signing up to participate each day. If anyone has a contact at a neighborhood restaurant and wants to approach them about participating, I'm sure that would be appreciated.

More than anything, I would encourage everyone to take a look at the list of participating restaurants on the website - espeically if you're going to go out to dinner on Monday night anyway.

Am I just not getting something?
Eastern Market is owned by the city, correct?
The city said they will rebuild the market, correct?
The city is obviously swimming in money (see 800 trillion billion million dollar baseball stadium).
I pay taxes (income, property, and sales).
So why does Eastern Market need finacial help?
Sort of sounds like somebody is taking people for a ride.

The Eastern market building will not be repaired for a couple of years. There are plans for a temporary market on the Hines playground, but even that won't be ready until at least September. In the meantime, the vendors and their employees need to eat. This group is trying to help them.

The second anonymous has it exactly right. This is from the very beginning of www.diningoutforeasternmarket.com :

"On Monday, April 30, 2007 Capitol Hill awoke to the news that a neighborhood treasure had gone up in flames! The South hall of Eastern Market was lost to fire. The Mayor has pledged to rebuild the market in the next 18—24 months. However, in the meantime the merchants and their employees are out of work. (my emphasis)

Dining Out for Eastern Market was created to provide a way for Capitol Hill restaurants and residents to raise funds for this important cause."

And for an idea of where and how the funds are being used, check out the Capitol Hill Community Foundation's website. They're the overarching organization that is spearheading the efforts to help the merchants and employees, and their website is www.capitolhillcommunityfoundation.org.

Hope that puts some folks' minds at ease as to whether or not anyone is "taking people for a ride."
