Dr. Granville's Opening Friday

The Going Out Gurus chat for the week suggested that Dr. Granville's might last Thursday, but this turned out not to be the case. The opening is now confirmed for this Friday. The Belgian themed tavern will feature an enticing menu and 4 beers on tap. Dr. Granville's is located at 1238 H Street.

According to an email from Chris (the manager I think) from this week, they are hoping to open the weekend of August 3rd.

from the post's gurus...

Farragut North: Hey Gogs!

Love the chats. This is probably a Fritz question. How's the food selection at The Red and The Black? Doing a pub crawl on H Street tomorrow night, and wanted to start somewhere where people just coming from work could get something to eat. Would Red and the Black suffice, or should we start at the Argonaut? Thanks!

Fritz: I've eaten at the Red and the Black, and I thought the gumbo was okay -- nothing to write home about, especially if you're from Louisiana, but it gets the job done. I think it's best for people who are going to a show there and want to get something to snack on before or between bands.

I've been told, though, that Dr. Granville Moore's is finally -- FINALLY -- opening tomorrow next to the Pug. The menu is Belgian, focusing on frites (eight different sauces) and 65 Belgian beers. (Only two of those are on tap, though: Stella and De Koninck.)

Horace and Dickey's is still my spot, though the lack of seating can be a problem, so I'd say you should eat at the Argo.

'soft opening' for those on the 'in'....

I can't get over Fritz liking Horace and Dickies...service and food and sanitation leave a lot to be desired.

Pretty pumped up about the Dr's though. I looked through the window this morning and they had the jukebox blaring ... looks close.

horace and dickey's ROCKS!

they were a spotlight of 'great american dives' on the travel channel. if you missed it, you can buy the dvd for $25 to figure out where you went wrong. ;o)

j: I think you're the only person that *doesn't* like Horace and Dickey's.

he's not the only one

poo poo, i have to disagree with your take on the food at The Red and the Black. I'd be hard-pressed to refer to any of it as "okay". Putting dry kidney beans atop dry, boiled rice and calling it red beans and rice is kinda laughable and it's minimally edible. the same for their "mufellatta". The only thing that is truly NOLA or LA about this place is the Abita and the tiling on the floor of the men's bathroom. Sorry, had to be said.

I've had the fish and the fried chicken at Horace and Dickey's:

- H&D's the only "southern" place I know that can't cook fried chicken to save itself. Even the Popeye's around the corner does better fried chicken, which tells you how bad H&D's fried chicken really is.

- The fried fish is OK, but it's not hard to find much better elsewhere. The Argonaut's fare can give H&D's a run for its money any day, but without all the hooplah and sketchiness.

The people that rave about H&D's fall into two groups: they've been eating at H&D's and nowhere else for so long, they don't know or care that DC can offer much better elsewhere, or else they heard about H&D's from Southern Living (or the Travel Channel) and, lacking their own judgment, follow the judgment of these out-of-towner guides.

DC has more and more good food to offer every day. Don't rely on outsider magazines and TV shows to tell you what's good. And please, please please do yourself a favor and find yourself some REAL good fried fish somewhere... it ain't at H&D's!

Sorry Bud but there is no way that the Argo tasteless catfish or so-so chicken drumsticks are close to beating Horance & Dickie fare. Argo fare is ok... but really nothing to rave about. H&D fish is worthy of a loud shout!

You can make the case that H&D isn't as good as the oldschool fish frys they used to have off Maine Avenue, back when they deepfried locally caught fish in pure lard. But those days are gone and H&D is the only thing that's even trying to come close. Argo food is alright if you've had a few beers, but comparing their Arthur-Treachers-meets-Mrs.-Paul-while-she's-doing-the-Gorton's-Fisherman fish is just ridiculous.

Slummindc: "The fried fish is OK, but it's not hard to find much better elsewhere" Where? Recommendations are truly welcome. I like H&D's fish - add a side dish and you've got dinner for 2 for about $5 - but if there's better, please share. (Also, it should be local and similarly priced: Eamonn's has great fish, but it's 2-3 times as much as H&D's, and it's in Old Town.)

Roll Call had a good article on Thursday on Granville Moore's.

http://www.rollcall.com/issues/53_13/mugshots/19549-1.html?type=pf

It's subscription only, of course, so here are a couple key quotes:

--“It’s a place for conversation, with no distractions,” proprietor Chris Surrusco said of the intimate seating and candlelit tables.

--Check out the bathrooms with beautiful marble floors and original water boxes above the latrines on the way to the back patio biergarten, where a few wrought iron benches surround antique wooden tables — a perfect atmosphere for al fresco dining.

--On hand, he’s got brewers, beer experts and experienced servers. Also in his arsenal of employees are two bartenders who are fluent in American Sign Language, and a weekly Gallaudet University night is in the works at the bar to cater to patrons from the nearby college for the hearing-impaired.

--“People are going to be amazed by what comes out of this kitchen,” he said, as he points out that everything on the menu will be fresh, so deep-freeze storage isn’t needed.

Man am I excited.

Fish and Chips at the Dubliner ($10.95) are always good. Are they twice as good as H&D's? Probably not, but you do get fries, you do get to sit down, and you can order a beer. Too bad the bartender's an ass, and the waiters have a nasty habit of putting their friends drink orders on YOUR bill.

The fish at Levi's Port Cafe can be good if you get them to fry it fresh. Pass on the steam table buffet fish.

The fish at Irish Times, however, sucks the big one.

So do we know yet when its going to open? I keep looking at the headline "Granville's Opening Tonight" with new posts only to learn its not really opening "tonight". Sounds really good - I'm ready!

Why no website for this place, or am I just unable to find it?

I think there just isn't one yet. But a brick and mortar place is better than a website, no?
