Does anyone know how big a building we're talking about here?

10 stories?

It is slated to be 8 stories, and is directly adjacent to the NY Ave metro--between the ATF building and the metro entrance.

There is a picture (I think this reflects the current plan) at the following:

http://www.hayneswhaley.com/project.aspx?t=5&id=2004-1108

The picture is somewhat hard to figure out--the view is looking North along Second Street NE, which is being reopened between the hotel and the ATF (the metro line is visible behind the hotel).

Hope this helps.

The website says first floor is retail. If so, that's great. That should be a requirement for all new construction in this area. If you want a lively neighborhood, you must have ground floor retail.

wow! it's gettin' pretty crowded over there....

did anyone check out club ibiza on friday? that's just a block or so away from this contstruction site....

Ibiza's public grand opening is this Friday (July 6th). DJ AM will be spinning, apparently, and Kim Kardashian ("worldwide socialite") will be hosting. Doors open at 9.

Ugh, so this is why we can't have a parking lot right next to the metro? I thought the hospitality business in DC was struggling?

For what it is worth, I don't think ATF would allow a parking lot at that location. Witness the fortress-style construction of their building.

The AFT building has got to be in the running for 1st place in the ugly contest. The view of it coming east on Florida looks like a fort in a shower cap. What is that plastic sheeting off of the top of the building? Annnnnd what is that thing near the street in front of the building.

it's still being finished off, but the front thing is actually a form of protection (buttress) that they tried to make ... interesting.

the hotel was already having massive problems getting its plans approved because the ATF was always complaining about security....

there are already too many parking lots in that area. thank goodness most of them will be eliminated.

if you live in dc, you don't need a car to drive a few blocks to the metro. that's just retarded.

I have to agree. And there are a bunch of bike racks and lockers right there if you have too far to walk. The lockers are a great deal, by the way. They run about 7 bucks a month.

So they're building a hotel next to the train tracks? Do I understand this correctly? That's going to be pretty awful for some of the tourists. I used to live in a dorm at Catholic U. that was right on the tracks. Those 3 a.m. trains are really really loud.

umm.. dunno if you guys read people, star, etc. but kim and dj am are in there all the time, along with nicole richie, et. al.

it's pretty big news in socialite circles that they will be in your hood.

don't poo poo it, pls.

different technology nowadays.

they can shut off the sound of the tracks.

Anonymous said...

Is that the same technology that makes it possible for to hear the trains, 13 blocks away?

Anonymous said...

last anon:

yeah, uh huh, that's the same technology. read more about it on a cassette tape you can get on ebay, and listen to on your walkman. i forget the name of the tape, but get someone like an intern to research it for you.

do you really think a hotel (courtyard?!?!) would build a noisy joint next to the railroad?

clearly you were never a business major.

or a very good complainer....

Anonymous said...

by the way, last anon.

methinks you might want to upgrade the technology of your windows/house, if you can hear trains that far away.

it's not the train's problem, it's yours.

goofball.

i can't figure out if you're 86 or 12 years old... maybe right in the middle.

The metro parking lot's happening, look at the construction across the street... There's even a bridge made to get to it. You have to get off the metro, go down the steps, and go back up them again to get to it.

Alan, why would a two, three level parking lot be more of a security risk than a eight story hotel, with parking, BTW?

Anonymous said...

don't ask alan, ask the ATF.

do yourself a favour and find out how you're tax dollars are spent over a bunch of b.s.

(i still think a parking lot there is pretty stupid. by your logic, they should have one in dupont, foggy bottom, etc.)

you're in the city, fellow citizen. lobby for lots in the burbs so that the bad drivers from VA and MD can lose their metal boxes.

I thought about a few snarky replies to the assinine parking-lot-requests, but clearly Poo Poo is already all over that.

I think I love Poo Poo.
