A fire started in the basement bedroom of an interior rowhouse in the 1100 block of Montello. At one point flames shot out of the lower windows. The family was on the first floor folding laundry when someone smelled smoke and opened the basement door to investigate. Everyone was able to get out safely. The houses immediately adjacent on both sides suffered some damage as well.

i drove by there this afternoon. there were a bunch of cops, and i had to slow down to put on my seatbelt. :o)
btw, i also stopped by 6th and L street.they're gutting the place. the contractor said that the owner is getting permits for a coffee shop, with outdoor seating. the guy i spoke with is the landscaper, and he intends on keeping the brick and figures that he can accomodate 6-8 tables outside.
it's a great building, and certainly would make a very cool cofee shop. he also said that they are going to try as much as possible to maintain the 'historic, victorian' character of the building.
a nice lil' addition to the hood.
i encourage everyone to stop by and see "the next new thing".
Do we know anything about the family and what they might need (if they lost everything)? How to contact them?
I was going to have a yard sale in the next month or so with baby things, clothes, some household items, etc, but if there's anything that I have that they need, I'm happy to help.
i also have a bunch of stuff if the folks in the burned down house need anything....
if there's a general contact number/email, or anything, i'd gladly donate....
