Fritz continues to praise H Street establishments when warranted, but I was a bit disturbed by two posts that were pretty vehement in their hate for H Street. It's ridiculous, but these people are clearly expecting the area to already be at the level of U Street or 14th Street, instead of an area that is still on its way up.
Kinda makes you wonder what these people would have said after a night at the Black Cat ten years ago...
H St will never draw the Late Nite Shots crowd or the Sheltered Suburbanite crowd, and that should be fine with us if we like integrated neighborhoods, experimental businesses, and an open stool at a quality bar. I'm actually more worried about the GoG hype than about the commenters' negativity. So long as the bars/restaurants that are open can be profitable, I say let them stay in Gtown and Adams Morgan.
Made it down to the Brickyard yesterday, and was delighted with the cold Chimay, the spicy frite sauces, and the perfect scallops. The manager guy (Chris?) was down-to-Earth and clearly pleased at the first-week turnout. Turns out he used to work at Restaurant Eve, which is perhaps Old Town Alexandria's best restarant.
And Inked herself was in attendance, lending an aire of disrespectibility to the establishment. She managed to behave herself while I was there, but I'm sure ended up wrassling drunks and breaking things.
We went tonight & it was standing room only again. The food is really nice and the prices reasonable. I'd like to know who does the interiors of these places. It was stripped bare and the walls were just left there with plaster over some of the bricks, not over others. You can see where the stairs used to go up to the second floor...the electric panel is basically right there up front where people can lean on it, just painted brown. In the picture it looks like the ceiling is down to the joists but they've actually encased each joist in wood. The bar looks like it was made from hardwood planks taken from the floor. It's all very basic yet it's made to work by close attention to detail. Really nice.
Weekend Plans?: Well, I don't have any plans, but I know what I won't be doing: going to H Street. I went last Saturday night and it was a real...dump hole.
I'm going to get my passport on Saturday, do a 30-minute workout, and then play PC games.
I'm not sure what the ellipses means. Is it like he couldn't find the perfect phrase to describe how he felt about H street and had to pause, pause, pause.
there are three people in my immediate office (the all live in vir-gin-ai-ay) that are dying to check out the place after i sent them the menu that was posted to FT.
it just keeps getting better....
again, you folks that are stuck in the present/past, need to think a bit more FORWARD.
with the light rails coming, and all the new places, you might be surprised....
if you're clueless..
also, check out rob goodspeed's update for a pretty concise discussion about gentrification.

scroll down a little, and make sure to check out the pics of the old rail cars... there's some cool pix to union station on one of his links to an older railman.....
My friend and I tried to go on Friday night: not a seat in the house! I'm happy for them, if a little disappointed we had to leave. We'll have to go midweek, I guess.
FYI - I read the WashPost review and I don't think it's totally accurate. Chris told me that they do have a full liquor license and will be bring in hard liquor for mixed drinks - just not sure when yet.
My partner and I went back last night, and were less thrilled than than the first time. The fries that were to die for crispy last week, were severely undercooked last night. The scallops were FANTASTIC, should have ordered double of those. BTW, they stated the menu will change to now have more of a pub food atmosphere. I/we loved the entrees, and they will probabaly be gone. DANG..go soon before those delicious entrees vanish.Hopefully the crisp fries will return.
i think it's awesome that they're changing the menu to more pub food. who needs delicious fresh grilled fish when you can have greasy pub food instead?? and if there's one thing we're in short supply of in the new places on h street, it's pub food. sweet!!!

one of the gog commenters says fritz shouldn't praise h street until the atlas opens. clearly we're dealing with an uninformed crowd here.

I think that speaks for itself.
anon 9:56,
that dude probably decided to "hang out" on h street in second life and decided it wasn't happening enough for him.

Ah, yes, "dump hole" that's it.
There's a link on the front page of washingtonpost.com right now that leads to this review of Dr. Granville Moore's.
